Title: Thanks

Text:        & Deut 6:10-12

Illust:     Over the years I have received a number of handkerchiefs as presents. – Not sure what to do with them -  I mean think about it, you blow snot into them & then what do you do. Fold it up & put in your pocket. – Take it home & put it into the Laundry basket for your wife to pickup – Some things that are meant to be a throw away item – Hooray for Kleenex. – Pondering this & although I will probably never use them – I should be & I am grateful that someone even thought to give me a present.

I.                   Ingratitude

A.               Personal

i.                 One of the curses of this age, rooted in the general selfishness of our society is the sin of ingratitude. – People just are no longer grateful for what they get anymore.

ii.               A society that wants more & better. – flasher, faster, more high tech. A people by & large unsatisfied with their lot in life & also totally ungrateful.

iii.             How many people do you think are grateful / thankful when they get their welfare payment. – No most see it as a right. – We demand & demand & don’t even realise how much of what we think we should get as a right is far beyond what most of the rest of the world gets / has

B.               Wider Life

i.                 People knock this country, complain about it – Aren’t thankful for what we have, freedom, finances, fun. – We can go anywhere, we have more money than any other generation in history & we have more options for fun than thought of just 50 years ago.

ii.               We are truly blessed but how many people are grateful / thankful. – Most don’t even think about it.  – This is what our text is talking about – A society that has everything but has forgotten the source of our blessing

Psalm 106:7 Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; They did not remember the multitude of Your mercies, But rebelled by the sea—the Red Sea. (NKJV)

iii.             Real danger that we as individuals forget the blessings that we have received & most importantly the source of those blessings.

II.                 Giving Thanks

A.               Count Your Blessings

i.                 A little song used to sing in Sunday School. – Count your blessings name them one by one, count your blessing see what God has done, Count your blessings, name them one by one and it will surprise you what the Lord has done. – Cute little song; but powerful truth.

ii.               It is important that we spend some time & what better time than Christmas time to spend time counting your blessings, thinking about, meditating on, the blessings that you have received.

iii.             We have received so many blessings it might surprise you how blessed you really are.

B.               Give Thanks

i.                 We need to be thankful, we need to take time to be thankful.

Psalm 50:14 Offer to God thanksgiving, And pay your vows to the Most High. (NKJV)

ii.               Manners an important part of raising children, teaching them manners. – To say please & thankyou. – Thankyou takes effort, you have to be grateful, then you have to take the time to say thankyou.

iii.             Need to set aside some time in the next week to thank God for what He has done for you this year.

III.              The Best Gift

A.               Immanuel

i.                 Most importantly tonight at this Christmas time, don’t lose the wonder of Immanuel, God with us

John 1:1-3 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. (NKJV)

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (NKJV)

ii.               Pretty amazing if you stop to think about it this evening. God the creator, the awesome, all powerful, king of kings chose to be born into the world, A gift for the whole world, the best gift that this world has ever received.

iii.             The best gift that you could possibly receive, the best gift that you could bring to a loved one this Christmas season is to share with them the Gospel

B.               Out of Bondage in Egypt

i.                 Your very salvation is precious. As the years pass we can forget what we have been saved from, the bondage we were in, the life of sin / depravity / hopelessness that would have been our lot ~ & vs. 12

ii.               Need to beware lest we become ingrates over our very salvation. – Saved, going to heaven through no strength or ability of our own. – Only through the grace, the mercy of God. – A free gift

iii.             Give thanks at this Christmas time for the blood that was shed for your salvation, the blood of the baby lying in the Manger

IV.             Altar Call
