Title: Firestorm

Text:        & Rev 3:14-19

Illust:     I have seen & heard news reports over the past week on the California Wildfires that have destroyed over 800 homes & couldn’t help but think of that day in January 2003 when the fires raged through Canberra. – Not a big fan of the National Museum but there is a presentation on the Budhfires that features some video footage – Intense. – The conditions were just right to create a firestorm. -A firestorm is a inferno which attains such intensity that it creates and sustains its own wind system.

I.                   Power Unleashed

A.               Necessity for Power

i.                 Storms in Qld, one of the metrics that the media give us to explain how serious the storm was is how many houses are without power. – When you have a blackout, you realise all of a sudden how much you have that needs electrical power. How much of the comfort of your day to day living relies on a constant flow of power into your home – Appliances need power – Don’t work without it

ii.               Without it life is not just less effective, it is uncomfortable, no light, airconditioning, cooking facilities, fridge/freezer, hot water. Affects every area of your life.  – Also costs you; Food spoils, businesses can’t get things done. – Necessity of life

iii.             Your daily personal life, as a Christian. You can’t be effective, it costs you, emotionally trying to keep up a Christian front with no real strength or joy, if you don’t have the power you need. This is why Jesus said:

Luke 24:49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” (NKJV)

Luke 24:49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.” (NLT)

iv.             Power from heaven so necessary that Jesus tells his followers don’t move from Jerusalem until you have this power, until you are connected into the grid.

B.               Fire From Heaven

i.                 Electricity can be very dangerous, yet we have incredible control over the power that we use. Flick switches, lights on/off – Total control. The Combustion of petrol in your engine – controlled. We use power that we control all the time.

ii.               This is what we want with God, we want to be in control, be able to flick a switch & see God’s power at work in our life as needed. & then when we want to be able to flick it off too, if it starts to demand too much from us. – Power from Heaven can’t be controlled. Controls you.

iii.             & Acts 2:1-4 – No control, it’s a firestorm – The followers of Jesus were swept up in what God wanted to do

Luke 12:49  “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! (NKJV)

II.                 Firestorms Impact

A.               Burning Fire

i.                 Firestorms have incredible power, they have an impact, they leave evidence of their passing. Consume all in their path. – Fire of God is an all consuming fire.

Hebrews 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire. (NKJV)

ii.               Incinerates the pride and foolish pretences of men & women. It burns away our defensive exteriors of self righteousness & leaves us exposed before God as the sinners we are. It consumes sickness & disease. Ignites a zeal, a passion for holiness and the spreading of the Gospel.

iii.             There is an impact, lives are changed, people are set alight for God to burn with a hunger to be more like Jesus, to live Holy, to see God move

B.               Supernatural Firestorm

i.                 It is not a natural thing, it does not need to be conjured up, The Holy Spirit comes in like a firestorm, burns with an intensity that He fuels, that He creates, that He propagates.

ii.               It is a supernatural firestorm. God moving in supernatural power. This is what we see in t he book of acts, this is what the church needs today-  A firestorm of Holy Spirit fire.

Luke 3:16 John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (NKJV)

iii.             Supernatural – Gifts; & 1 Cor 12:4-11 ~ Revelation, Inspiration & Power gifts – impact on this generation that believes nothing but believes anything

III.              Right Conditions

A.               A Right Heart

i.                 The Canberra firestorm occurred because of the right conditions; fuel load, wind diretion & speed. Inevitable with the right conditions you will get a firestorm. So to if we want to see a holy Ghost firestorm – need the right conditions:

Repent: An acknowledgment that you are sinning & a decision to turn from that sin. To seek instead to do what God wants you.

Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, (NKJV)

Repentance; is a prerequisite to the gift of the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (NKJV)

ii.               In our text Jesus commands the lukewarm church to repent & vs.19. Notice that he also commands them to be zealous: 1 to burn with zeal. 1a to be heated

iii.             Zealousness, a burning heart, a man or woman on fire for God, a church on fire; follows after repentance.

B.               Desire

i.                 Finally there must be a desire for the fire. Two hundred years ago Charles Wesley sang:

“Oh that in me the sacred fire might now begin to glow, burn up the dross of base desire and make the mountains flow”

ii.               A man or woman that would cry out to God. That would desire the fire of the Holy Spirit to burn in their life that you would be set on fire, to burn, burn with Holy fire.

“A blazing bush drew Moses, a blazing church will attract the world” Leonard Ravenhill

iii.             We need another Canberra firestorm, this time a supernatural firestorm of the power of God. Supernatural gifts at work, the sick healed, the captives delivered & set free from bondages to sin & destruction. – Can’t do it with just ho-hum church as usual – Need the fire of God

To make my weak heart strong and brave, Send the fire. To live a dying world to save, send the fire. Oh, see me on Thy altar lay my life, my all, this very day: To crown the offering now, I pray: Send the fire! -

IV.             Altar Call
