Introduction
*Review of last week: *Much of 1 John discusses the subject of love.
However, last week we looked at the kind of love that is not honoring to God; rather it is a love that He hates.
*The apostle John says,* "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.
If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him" (v.
15).
*The meaning of the term *"world" in the context of 2:15-17 refers to the system of evil that dominates the earth.
Christians are not to love that system because it is inconsistent with their love for the Father.
*First John 5:19** *says that the whole world lies in control of the wicked one.
It conveys the picture of a nurse cradling a child.
The whole world is cradled in the arms of Satan.
We also looked at */The Methods of the world./*
The world, as we looked at last week, has methods to try and destroy our faith and walk with God and to have us walk with it rather than God:
*As we just mentioned that *“the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
“  (1 John 5:19, NASB95)
*Paul exhorted the Corinthians that "*no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes."
(2 Corinthians 2:11, NASB95)… we don’t need to be ignorant…
*And since we are not ignorant of his schemes, Paul exhorts us to *"Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil."
(Ephesians 6:11, NASB95)
…and so last week we looked at the */Methods of the world…/* and the scheme or method we looked at was that of */compromise./*
Although true Christians do not love the world, we sometimes flirt with it.
We learned that our compromise will lead to…
*Friendship with the world, James put it this way: *"You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God?  Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God."  (James 4:4)
*Our friendship will lead to being spotted *"Pure and undefiled religion *says James *in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world."
(James 1:27, NASB95)
*So now our being spotted will lead to being conformed *"And do not be conformed to this world, *Paul said *but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
" (Romans 12:2, NASB95)
*And our being conformed will lead to being condemned or disciplined* "But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world."
(1 Corinthians 11:32, NASB95)

We also looked at */The Might of the world/*, the power working against us in (v.16) /the lust of the flesh, eyes, and the pride of life./
The */things of the world/* are these mentioned in (v.16).
And lastly, we looked at */The Perspective we are to have of this world./*
The Christian is to look at the world with the perspective God has of it… and this is found in (v.17):
*Realize everything in this world is passing away and there is nothing you can take with you:* *John says that *"The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever."
(1 John 2:17)
*Realize your citizenship is in heaven*, for this is what Paul says in (Philippians 3:20).
*And lastly, Beware of paying too high a price for temporary satisfaction.
*Esau traded the lasting benefits of his birthright for the immediate pleasure of food* *(Genesis 25:27-34).
This week we will be looking at the subject of */Overcomers/*.
Three times John uses this word /overcome/, which lets us know that a real conflict is going on in the world.
Furthermore, the Bible declares that Christians can experience overcoming, conquest, and victory.
There also is no reason at all to be a defeated Christian.
If you are a child of God, everything you need for victory is available to you.
Two different tenses of the verb /overcome/ are used.
The */first /*and */third /*time is used in the */present tense/*; it is a daily overcoming.
The /second /time it is used in a */tense that means something took place in the past and was settled once and for all/*.
/“This is the victory that overcame the world—our faith”/ (v.4b); it took place in the past.
! Overcoming: The Initial Conquest (v.4b).
!!! 1.                  ‘This is the */victory that has overcome/ *the world—our faith…’  (v.4b).
!!!! a)                  The Son of God */appeared /*for this purpose, */to destroy /*the */works of the devil/ (1 John 3:8)*.
!!!!! (1)                 How did Christ destroy the works of the devil?
The text gives two answers and we need to ask how these two are related to each other
!!!!!! (a)                 By /appearing/… that is by coming from heaven and being born in the form of man.
!!!!!! (b)                The second answer is in verse 9. "No one /born of God/ commits sin."
Sin is conquered; the work of the devil is destroyed, when a person is born of God.
!!!!! (2)                 */"destroy"/* means /"to loosen," "to undo" /or /"to remove."
/ Satan's works were like chains around us.
When Christ came, He threw off the chains and freed us from sin.
!!!!! (3)                 *Satan’s power /to accuse men with sin/ is now “cast out”* *(Zechariah 3:1-5)*.
Men now have the power to escape the penalty of sin.
Christ took the sins of men upon Himself and paid the penalty for their sin.
He died for the sins of the world.
*Jesus Christ Himself *“Bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness----by whose stripes you were healed.
(1 Peter 2:24 NKJV)
*Paul said *Who shall bring a charge against God's elect?
It is God who justifies.
(Romans 8:33 NKJV)
*No condemnation* "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus" (Rom8:1)

!!!!! (4)                 *Satan’s power /to cause death/ is now “cast out” (Heb.2:14-15).
*Satan knew that God required death for us because of sin and if we remained in sin and then die, we would go out of God’s presence forever in hell.
Christ died /for man/, became man’s substitute in death.
!!!!!! (a)                 Jesus went into death, through death, and came out on the other side, conquering it.
*Jesus said to His disciples *"A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me.
Because I live, you will live also.
(John 14:19 NKJV)
!!!!!! (b)                We have been released from bondage & the fear of death & actually look forward to it.
*Paul said *For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
(Philippians 1:21 NKJV)
*Also *"O Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?" (1 Corinthians 15:55)

!!!!! (5)                 *Satan’s power /to cause men to be separated from God/ is now “cast out” (1Peter 3:18).*
Jesus Christ bridged the gap that He might bring us to God, enabling us to enter His presence.
*Paul said we have *"been justified by faith, *and *we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access *by faith* into this grace in which we stand."
(Romans 5:1-2, NKJV)
*Paul said the Jesus *"Is our peace… "For through Him we… have access by one Spirit to the Father" (Ephesians 2:17-18, NKJV)
*And because Jesus destroyed the works of the devil, we are invited to *"come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
(Hebrews 4:16, NKJV)

!!!!! (6)                 *Satan’s power /to enslave men/ with the habits of sin is now “cast out” (Rom.6:1-2)*.
By His death, Christ made it possible for man to be freed from sin.
The believer, cleansed by the blood of Christ, becomes a holy temple unto God, a temple fit for the presence and power of God’s Spirit.
Man can now conquer the enslaving habits of sin by the power of God’s Spirit.
!!!!!! (a)                 *Romans 6:6-8**, 12**-14, 18-22; 1 John 4:4 “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world”*.
!!!!! (7)                 *Satan’s /evil spirits/ and /forces/ were conquered by His resurrection (1 John 3:8).*
*Paul said* Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
(Colossians 2:15 NKJV)
!!!!! (8)                 The proof of these works being destroyed in our lives is by being freed from living in sin (v.9) – /“for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God”.
/
*This leads to the next point….
/The continual conquest/*
!
Overcoming: The Continual Conquest (4a).
!!! 1.                  ‘For whatever is */born of God /*overcomes the world…’  (v.4a).
