JESUS—THE RIGHTEOUS BRANCH Matthew 1:20 (ESV) But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:1 (ESV) The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Matthew 1:6–7 (ESV) and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, Matthew 1:17 (ESV) So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. 2 Samuel 7:12–13, (ESV) When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish 13 his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom 16 forever. . . And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ” Isaiah 11:1(ESV) There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse [David’s father], and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. Jeremiah 23:5a (ESV) “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king Jeremiah 33:14–17 (ESV) “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house 15 of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to 17 spring up for David, . . . “For thus says the LORD: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, Jeremiah 23:5–6 (ESV) “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall 6 execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The LORD is our righteousness.’ Jeremiah 33:15 (ESV) In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. Isaiah 11:1–5 (ESV) There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse [David’s father], and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. 2And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, 4but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill 5 the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness [honesty] the belt of his loins. Matthew 5:21–22 (ESV) “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be 22 liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. Matthew 5:27–28 (ESV) “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not 28 commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 1 Peter 3:18 (ESV) For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV) For our sake he [God the Father] made him [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him [Jesus] we might become the righteousness of God. Philippians 3:8–9 (ESV) Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I 9 Christ and may gain be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— Psalm 51:2–4a (ESV) Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse 3 me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, 4 and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, Romans 15:12 (ESV) And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.”
