Galatians 5:24-26
The spiritual life is not something we contrive, but it is something God gives.
I.
The Position of a Spiritual Christian
(v.
24)
A. A Statement of Ownership
Verse 24 says, “They that are Christ’s” meaning “they that belong to Christ.”
1.
We are purchased by Christ
Young boy and his boat – twice mine
2. We are in Christ
B. A Statement of Position
1.
A position of victory
Although former influences like the old man and the world still existed, they no longer dominated the Apostle Paul.
But if we are crucified with Christ, the rule and reign of the flesh and the desires of the flesh no longer have control over him.
The flesh ceases to have a place or a position in his life.
He is free from the flesh, free from…
Fleshly habits
Fleshly control
Fleshly bondage
Fleshly judgment
Fleshly enslavement
Fleshly condemnation
Fleshly death
To be crucified with Christ means we no longer live in the flesh.
We cannot live apart from the flesh, but we are free from living after the flesh.
2. A position of finality
Paul explains that everyone who belongs to Christ Jesus by faith in Him has crucified the flesh.
Paul is saying that the flesh has been executed.
But how could that be in light of what he just said In this chapter about believers having a constant war with the ever-present flesh?
This passage looks back to the cross, the time at which the death of the flesh was actually accomplished.
Like a chicken with its head cut off, the flesh has been dealt a death blow, however it continues to flop around the barnyard of earth until the last nerve is stilled.
We looked at the Position of a Spiritual Christian, now let’s look at...
II.
The Prompting of a Spiritual Christian
(v.
25)
Because of this position in Christ, we are to walk consistent with that position.
“We who are Christians profess to be under the influences of the Holy Spirit.
By His influences and agency is our spiritual life.
We profess not to be under the dominion of the flesh; not to be controlled by its appetites and desires.
Let us then act in this manner, and if we believed this.
Let us yield ourselves to his influences, and show that we are controlled by the Spirit.”
Albert Barnes
A. He Lives in the Spirit
We are in the flesh geographically but not spiritually.
Spiritually, we are “in Christ.”
This is our standing or position, and it does not change.
B. He is Led of the Spirit
If we are led by the Holy Spirit, then we don’t need to be under the law because the Spirit will guide us in what is righteous, good and true.
C.
He Walks in the Spirit
1.
A guided walk
In the world of technology there is a new development called Hyper Sonic Sound (HSS).
The inventor, Elwood “Woody” Norris, has engineered sound waves to travel like a laser beam for about 150 yards.
This allows sounds to be heard by a person in a particular place but not by those immediately around them.
You could be listening to music or specific instructions while those standing next to you would be left in total silence.
If you move out of the tightly formed path of these unique sound waves you too will be unaware of any noise.
God's communication with us is very similar to these sound waves.
We must be in the right place to hear the Holy Spirit, and when we’re there the message is clear.
If we move away from the pathway of His voice we become unaware of the fact that He is communicating with us and we consequently miss the message.
2. A worthy walk
Watch out for any ministry or person who claims to be led by the Holy Spirit but acts contrary to the Word of God.
And beware of any movement or group whose focus is the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit points not to Himself but to Jesus Christ.
– George Sweeting

III.
The Practice of a Spiritual Christian
When believer’s are challenged to live spiritual lives, there is always the danger that some will become super-spiritual.
Often those become prideful and like to show their superiority and become judgmental.
Michael & Casey - remember everyone grows at their own rate.
When led of the Spirit, the child of God must be as ready to wait as to go, as prepared to be silent as to speak.
– Lewis Sperry Chafer
A. Humble
(v.
26a)
1. Forgive one another
2. Rejoice for others
3. Don’t hold offenses
B. Helpful
(v.
26b)
If we are not to be provoking one another, we should be helping one another.
C. Hopeful
(v.
26c)
Conclusion
Christians who walk in the Spirit will fulfill their responsibilities toward God and man.
It is important for us to remember that if we walk in the flesh, we cannot and will not bear the fruit of the Spirit.
When God’s Spirit prompts our heart to move on His behalf or to rid ourselves of sin, we must not ignore Him.
