Sermon Title: The Peace You’re Looking For
Main Passage: Isaiah 9:2, 6-7
Advent is an opportunity for new Christians to both look back to the long-foretold first coming of the Messiah, and in turn to learn to look forward to his coming again.
In Christ, we have:
Peace with God
Romans 5:1
Luke 1:26-30
Matthew 1:21
Luke 1:76-79
Isaiah 53:5
Peace with others
Isaiah 2:4-5
Ephesians 2:14
Colossians 3:15
INTRO:
Sermon series: ADVENT
It was an opportunity for new Christians to both look back to the long-foretold first coming of the Messiah, and in turn to learn to look forward to his coming again.
Hope
Love
Joy
Peace
The 20th-century Christian martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer put it, “The celebration of Advent is possible only to those who are troubled in soul, who know themselves to be poor and imperfect, and who look forward to something greater to come.”
As the old carol puts it, “Yet in the dark streets shineth, an everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.”
Jesus Come Quickly by Mercy Me
Come quickly Lord, oh please show your face Revive us now from our lifeless state We need your help oh this world can't wait Show us your grace and your mercy Jesus come quickly
peace between God and people (the healing of the broken relationship brought about by the sin of humans) is initiated in the incarnation of Jesus
The incarnation, the birth of the Son of God, is the greatest mystery ever!
John Clark writes that, It leads to the incredible confession that...
“God, without ever ceasing to be God, actually became what he created in order to reconcile us to himself. God’s love is so great, his mercy and grace so persistent… that he performed an act of unparalleled condescension.”
John Calvin, “becoming Son of man with us, he has made us sons of God with him; by his descent to earth, he has prepared an ascent to heaven for us; that, by taking on our mortality, he has conferred his immortality upon us; that, accepting our weakness, he has strengthened us by his power; that, receiving our poverty unto himself, he has transferred his wealth to us; that, taking the weight of our iniquity upon himself, he has clothed us with his righteousness...” putting us at peace with God!
“Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright. Round yon virgin, mother and Child, Holy Infant so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.”
peace is what we’re looking for… but what we have is anxiety, worry, conflict, stress and war
Vertical and horizontal peace
Peace with God
Peace with Others

Prince of Peace

Christ produced what you and I desperately need but have no power to deliver—vertical and horizontal peace. Sin alienates us from God and one another, making us enemies with God and casting us into constant conflict with other people. We are naturally better fighters than lovers. But God had a solution, a gift we could never achieve, earn, or deserve. Through the work of the Prince of Peace, we are invited to live in a worshipful community with God and a loving community with others.
Charles Wesley - Hark the Herald Angels Sing
the mystery of Christmas is indeed the meaning & message of the gospel:
Hark! The herald angels sing "Glory to the newborn King" Peace on earth and mercy mild God and sinners reconciled
Hail the Heaven-born Prince of Peace Hail the Sun of Righteousness Light and life to all He brings Risen with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by Born that man no more may die Born to raise the sons of Earth Born to give them second birth
Isaiah 9:2 ESV
2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
in a war… who are we going to trust?
at peace with God but not experiencing the peace of God
Main idea: The peace you’re looking for can only be found in Jesus.
You want to know the truth? All of this.... the hope, love, joy and peace you’re looking for can only be found in Jesus!
