Psalm 96 (KJV 1900)
1 O sing unto the Lord a new song: Sing unto the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; Shew forth his salvation from day to day.
3 Declare his glory among the heathen, His wonders among all people.
4 For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: He is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the nations are idols: But the Lord made the heavens.
6 Honour and majesty are before him: Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7 Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people, Give unto the Lord glory and strength.
8 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: Bring an offering, and come into his courts.
9 O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: Fear before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the heathen that the Lord reigneth: The world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: He shall judge the people righteously.
11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof.
12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: Then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice
13 Before the Lord: for he cometh, For he cometh to judge the earth: He shall judge the world with righteousness, And the people with his truth.
Introduction
There are many reminders that we could share with you on a day like today.
Thankful the Text today has us drawing our attention to the matter of worship.
Last week we looked at Psalm 95:1 “O come, let us sing unto the Lord: Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.”
This Psalm is a fulfillment and we see that we are to “sing a new song.”

Sing a new song

This is not a prohibition to old songs

Ephesians 5:19 (KJV 1900)
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

In Heaven we will sing a song of Moses

Revelation 15:3 (KJV 1900)
3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.

Called upon to sing a new song many times in the Psalms

Three Psalms start with it Psalms 96, 98, and 149
We are even told to Whom we are to sing this new song. Psalm 33:3 Sing unto him a new song; Play skilfully with a loud noise.
Psalm 144:9 adds its voice to the chorus, I will sing a new song unto thee, O God:

Why is this the case?

Psalm 40:3 (KJV 1900)
3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.
As God mercies are new every day and He continues to do a new work in our hearts we should be finding new ways and opportunities to express it!

As long as God shows His unmeasurable love to us we should sing about it.

Ephesians 2:7 (KJV 1900)
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Occurrences where this Psalm is sung

David having the Ark of the Covenant moved. 1 Chron 16 - God ha a way in which He wants to be worshipped.
Allusion to this Psalm in Revelation 5:9 “9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;” - God being worship by all nations is what this entire story is all about.
Very fitting Psalm as we send out more missionaries to sing this New Song to the nations.

Missions begins with the worship of believers moving outward to the entire world.

We have 6 imperatives
Sing (3) / Our hearts and mind our joined with our affections.
Come, ye that Love the Lord - Let those refuse to sing ,who never knew our God; but children of the heavenly King may speak their joys abroad.
Bless
Shew
Declare
When the canary in the coal mine stops singing you know there is a problem. If you lose your song you will lose your ministry.
You can’t call the nations to sing if you are not singing!

Give your all to the cause of Christ. Which is to live according to His purpose toward the world He came to redeem.

Listen to J. Campbell White, the first secretary of the Layman’s Missionary Movement in the early 1900’s. This movement was born among businessmen who were captured by a holy ambition to get behind what God was doing in the massive Student Volunteer Movement. Here is what the main leader among laymen said:
Most men are not satisfied with the permanent output of their lives. Nothing can wholly satisfy the life of Christ within his followers except the adoption of Christ’s purpose toward the world he came to redeem. Fame, pleasure and riches are but husks and ashes in contrast with the boundless and abiding joy of working with God for the fulfillment of his eternal plans. The men who are putting everything into Christ’s undertaking are getting out of life its sweetest and most priceless rewards. (J. Campbell White, “The Layman’s Missionary Movement,” in Perspectives on the World Christian Movement: A Reader, 225)

Worship is specifically to be directed toward God who has revealed Himself through His Word

Worship is misunderstood if you google the word

What is worship?

Whole hearted response to God.
Engagement with God on His terms where only He makes it possible.
Worship is our innermost being responding with praise for all that God is, through our attitudes, actions, thoughts, and words, based on the truth of God as He has revealed Himself.
Worship is all that we are, reacting rightly to all that He is.
Psalm 96:8 (KJV 1900)
8 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: Bring an offering, and come into his courts.

You have been taught so many things that most of the world does not know.

Colombians and Peruvians cannot praise Him for a salvation they do not know they have.
Psalm 96:2 Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; Shew forth his salvation from day to day.
Colombians and Peruvians will not praise Him for being great if they have not heard of His great wonders.
Psalm 96:4 For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: He is to be feared above all gods.
Colombians and Peruvians will live in bondage the false gods unless someone shows them the One true God.
Psalm 96:5 For all the gods of the nations are idols: But the Lord made the heavens.
Colombians and Peruvians will not know of the coming judgement if they are not warned.
Psalm 96:10 Say among the heathen that the Lord reigneth: The world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: He shall judge the people righteously.
Dustin Brown told about his muslim doctor in Turkey saying when she visited a church she really loved the music.

People do not praise Him because they do not know Him. Let’s include more people in singing about our great God. Let’s sing a new song!!
