Why was Jehovah First Divine of the Trinity?

By: Rev. Lynwood F. Mundy

Scripture: Colossians 1:15-21

15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. 21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: 23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven;...

Jehovah First?

From the minds of secular men come the questions: Who are God’s parents? When was He born? How can He claim majesty over everything created on earth? Of the sky? And in the oceans of the world?

The Bible gives answers to all of the aforementioned questions:

  • Who are God’s parents?
    • God does not have parents because He is a spirit.
  • When was He born?
    • “…I AM THAT I AM…” (Gen. 3:14) This being interpreted as: Before there was a beginning, I was. Otherwise, God can be anything whenever He chooses. This shows the divinity of the covenant name of the God of Israel, YAHWEH.

U  How can He claim majesty over everything created on earth? Of the sky? And in the oceans of the world?

Genesis 1 and 2 shows why God can claim divine majesty over everything. One only has to look at Genesis 1:1 and its first ten (10) words to understand His claim: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

V  Colossians 1:15-17 fully explains God’s majesty: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

Jesus Second

“18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.” (Matthew 1:18)

“21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (Matthew 1:21-23)

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8:58)

To also show that Jesus was with God at Creation:

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:” (Genesis 1:28)

“17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” (Colossians 1: 17, 18)

The apostle Paul continues to show the Ephesians church what he has shown the Colossians church with the addition:

19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: 22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:19-22)

The Holy Ghost

The Holy Ghost was also with the Father, and Son at Creation, but ministers never speak of the Holy Ghost at Creation. He is plainly seen in Genesis 1:28 for the Spirit of God had not departed from man. The Spirit of God departed from man when he and his wife ate from the Tree of Knowledge (also known as the Tree of Good and Evil):

U  Genesis 3:22, 23 22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

The apostle Paul told the Galatians of the N.T. church:

“16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.” (Galatians 5:15-26)

The James the brother of Jesus writes:

U  “4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 5  Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”(James 4:4-10)

In conclusion

God has to be divine. Jesus has to be divine ,because he is the only person to be resurrected to save man from his sins and sits in heaven at the right hand of the Father. The Holy Ghost has to indwell in the believer to communicate, and be in touch as son’s and daughters of the Most High God Jehovah YHWH.

God + Jesus + Holy Ghost = 3 = Trinity
