A Child Is Born
Isaiah 9:1-7
Something good is coming.
No more gloom for those in anguish.
No more wandering around in darkness, chaos, confusion.
Light.
Increased Joy.
Increased nation.
Enemies defeated.
Blessing instead of oppression.
Something good is coming.
Because Someone good has come.
Jesus Is Our Joy
When Jesus begins his public ministry he goes to the Jordan River to be baptized by a prophet name John.
Look at Matthews account of this baptism.
Matthew 4:12-17
We see hear that John the Baptizer, Matthew, and Jesus all recognize the fulfument of this prophet from Isaiah is standing in the water.
Jesus is the light dawning in darkness.
Jesus is the increaser of our joy.
Jesus is the harvester who sows seeds of joy.
Jesus is the burden breaker.
Jesus is the conquering warrior.
Jesus is the joy of nations
Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah, the King.
Jesus is the just ruler.
Jesus is the joyful judge.
Jesus.
Now that we know that Isaiah 9 applies to Jesus, let's dig in a little more.

A Light That Brings Joy
Light has come

Isaiah 9:2-3
Jesus is the LIGHT that brings joy.
There is no joy walking in darkness.
There is no joy walking without direction.
There is no joy walking without a vision of where you are going.
There is no joy in hopelessness.
Jesus is the Light in darkness.
He is the sun breaking the darkness at dawn.
He is the Light that gives humanity hope and vision.
Jesus is the Light that brings joy.
Why is there joy?
I want us to look at three FORS that tell us the reason for joy.
One For: The Burden Is Broken.
Isaiah 9:4
The reference to Midian is a throwback to the battle where Gideon led an army of 300 men against the oppressors the Midianites.
Gideon was nothing special.
Looking at Gideon or his family that would think anyone this is the one who will defeat our oppressors.
But God used Gideon.
Gideon destroyed the alter of the false god Baal.
Gideon then defeated Midian with an army of 300.
God whittled the army for 32,000 to 300 men.
Jesus is a true and better Gideon.
Like a Freedom Fighter this Great Light will break the rod of the oppressor.
Colossians 2:15 ESV) [15] He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Two For: The War Has A Warrior Who Ends War.
Isaiah 9:5
His kingdom will be a Kingdom of Peace.
Every boot of war, all battle fatigues will be burnt up, useless and defeated.
One day every instrument of war will be burn up.
One day every instrument of violence will be repurposed into an instrument of peace.
Swords, gun, bombs, melted down into garden tools.
No more guns and school shootings.
No more medical forceps used to abort preborn humans.
No more genocide.
No more instruments of war.
What a day that will be when my Jesus I shall see.
No more war.
No more weapons of war.
No more need for war.
As anyone who has ever been to war or lived thru war will tell you, that day will be a day of rejoicing.
As anyone who has ever lost a loved one to violence or been a victim of violence will tell you, that day will be a day of rejoicing.
As any mother grieving from the choice to abort her baby and as her baby will tell you, that day will be a day of great rejoicing.
His kingdom will be a kingdom of peace.
Even so LORD Jesus come quickly!
Three For: A Child Born.
A Son Given.
A Name Above All Names.
Isaiah 9:6
(A gift is given.
A gift from Heaven.
[30] And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
[31] And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.
[32] He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.
And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, [33] and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
[34] And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”[35]
And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.

and the government shall be upon his shoulder

My Kingdom Is Not of This World
John 18:33-38 ESV)[33] So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” [34] Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” [35] Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew?
Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me.
What have you done?” [36] Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world.
If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews.
But my kingdom is not from the world.”
