Service Notes
We are just a couple weeks out from Christmas!
Tonight we will have our monthly Vision Fraternity and Ladies Fellowship / men will meet at 4 pm for the Mens Training Union
Ladies Christmas Dinner tomorrow at 6 pm
Text Introduction:
Though we did not spend much time on it, we ended the last story with laughter/scorn.
Tells of the condition of the world.
Not as welcoming as you might think.
We saw full dependency upon God on display.
In one person we saw needed action and the other in needed patience.
Today we will see dependency from the disciples.
We will look at a great deal of passages.
Sermon Outlines are provided on our church website & app in case you miss a reference and want to look at it later or if you would like to follow along.
Only as we are sent out into this world fully trusting God, proclaiming the Gospel, and demonstrating the compassion of Christ will we learn who we were created be.
Luke 9:1–9 (KJV 1900)
1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;
8 And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
9 And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things?
And he desired to see him.
So many questions
Herod’s question
The question by Herod “ but who is this, of whom I hear such things?”
seems to always be present in each of our stories
Reasonable that a king would have questions about a man who demonstrates great authority in what he believes is his kingdom
Mary’s questions
Mary did you know?
A song loved by some and possible disliked by others.
It does ask some valid questions, in my opinion.
Luke 1:34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
Luke 1:43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Luke 2:19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
Everyone had questions (review)
From the very beginning of following Jesus.
John 1:38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye?
They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
People had question after hearing Jesus teach Luke 4:36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
Those who came to be healed wondered if He would show compassion Luke 5:12 And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
His authority was often question Luke 5:21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies?
Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
His view of humanity was questioned Luke 5:30 But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
The fact He was the Messiah was questioned Luke 7:19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come?
or look we for another?
His understanding of the situation was questioned Luke 7:39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
His view of family would be questioned Luke 8:20 And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.
What manner of man is He is a common question Luke 8:25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith?
And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
Demons questioned Jesus timing Luke 8:28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high?
I beseech thee, torment me not.
Peter even questioned if Jesus knew what He was talking about Luke 8:45 And Jesus said, Who touched me?
When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
So it seems fitting for us to ask “Mary did you know?”
Disciples had questions as they followed Jesus.
If you are honest you still have questions as you follow Jesus.
A great deal of the questions revolved about Jesus authority and compassion.
It is understandable that we have questions
It is good to ask these questions if you are ready to act upon the answers
Jesus like these questions are found recurring in every story I believe they are also found all throughout the story of our lives as we follow Jesus
Who is this King of angels, O blessed Prince of Peace
Revealing things of Heaven and all it's mysteries
My spirit's ever longing for His grace in which to stand
Who is this King of glory, Son of God and song of man
His name is Jesus, precious Jesus
The Lord Almighty, the King of my heart
The King of glory
[Ending] The Lord of Earth and Heaven, the Creator of all things
He is the King of glory, He's everything to me
Thankfully I know so much more about King Jesus then I did as a teenager driving around in 1992 Mercury Topaz
The Christian life is life of asking hard questions and trusting Jesus with the answers to them.
This is how our dependence on Him grows and this will alter our lives in such a wonderful way.
Disciples have come so far now it is time for them to be sent out.
He called the twelve disciples, he gave them power, he sent them to preach the Kingdom of God
The cross is approaching

27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.

Jesus desire for us to be with Him should always cause people to be willing to follow Him
