Pre-Sermon Ice Breaker

A lady on an airplane reading her Bible. The fellow next to her said, “You don’t believe all that stuff do you?” She replied, “Of course, it’s the Bible.” He said, “Well, what about that guy who got swallowed by a whale.” She said, “You mean Jonah, Yeah I believe that too.” He said, “How could he live that long inside of a whale?” She thought about it a moment and said, “I don’t know, When I get to heaven, I’ll have to ask him.” He said, “well, what if he’s not in heaven.” She replied, “Then, you can ask him.”

Introduction

One of the most essential elements of life is hope. Without hope men perish no matter what their physical condition. The deaths of stars like Heath Ledger and Robin Williams only serve to validate this truth.
Perhaps the greatest gift other than life eternal that God gives believers is hope. This hope is based on our life in Christ.
As Christmas approaches we have the final four messages in a year in which we have sought to memorize God’s Word and Hide it in our hearts. Today’s passage comes from Romans 15. Here the Apostle Paul speaks to each of us about Hope. Within this verse we see 3 Essentials to a Biblical Understanding of Hope. Let’s look at them together.

Body

The Foundation of Hope

Romans 15:13 KJV 1900
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
God is the source of our hope
Psalm 39:7 KJV 1900
And now, Lord, what wait I for? My hope is in thee.
1 Timothy 1:1 KJV 1900
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest fram
But wholly lean on Jesus name
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand.

The Facets of Hope

Romans 15:13 KJV 1900
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Like the cuts in a gem. Hope has different facets, different components that bring out its beauty.
Joy - Delight
John 17:13 KJV 1900
And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
Peace -
Philippians 4:7 KJV 1900
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
In believing
John 3:16 KJV 1900
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The Fuel of Hope

Power -
John 15:5 KJV 1900
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Holy Spirit
Romans 5:5 KJV 1900
And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Conclusion

One of the most essential elements of life is hope. Without hope men perish no matter what their physical condition.
