Intro: In the last lesson we talked about Abram’s journey to the land of Canaan. There was famine there, so he went down into Egypt. He encountered trouble there and ended up back at the place where he had built an altar initially. He again called on the name of the Lord. Gen. 13:1-4. We talked about how we need these altars in our lives. Sometimes we make good choices sometimes not. But we should make these places where we meet God. They are stabilizing factor in our lives.

Abram Rescues Lot

We talked about the issue of strife between Abram and Lot last time.
Abram said; look lets not fight.
We are brethren.
Lessons for us: We are brethren.
Even outside of our church we should have this attitude. We are brethren!
The church and the kingdom are so much bigger than just us at this small point in time.
The attitude of yielding is held up in the New Testament.
Jesus said: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” Matthew 5:9.
Jesus also said, “If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.” Matthew 5:40-41
James 3:17-18 “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”
Abram was humble.
Acting in faith he deferred to Lot to choose.
More than likely uncharacteristic considering patriarchy of that era.
It seems that Abram was taking Lot “under his wing” Lot’s father had passed away.
The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah and 2 other kings, finally rebelled against Chedorlaomer.
Lot got caught up in this and taken captive.
Abram is notified.
This would have been a good time for Abram to remember that Lot was not wise.
We were told in chapter 13, verse 13, that: “the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord”.
Read Genesis 13:10. “it was well watered everywhere” Doesn’t this sound like the garden and the tree that God said Adam and Eve were not to eat of. Like the deceits of sin.
This didn’t seem like the separate people that God had called Abram to be.
It really takes a lot of humility to see people make poor choices and still be kind and civil.
Instead Abram didn’t hesitate.
His 318 trained servants must have seemed small compared to the foe.
He went, without taking time to see if God wanted him to.
Sometimes we think God must speak to us with every move we make.
Recently a 70 year old man said to young people that they want God to speak directly about everything they do.
He shared from his experience that his heart was to do the will of God, so an opportunity comes and you just take it.
I have found this to be true as well.
What is our motif in life?
If it is to follow and obey Jesus, many decisions fall into place.
Urie Sharp speaking to us at SMBI
Just go with God.

Melchizedek appears to Abram

He brought him bread and wine.
He blessed Abram.
He attributed Abram’s victory to God.
This was another stepping stone.
Another “altar” where Abram could say: God worked here.
Abram’s force was small, but he was victorious.
As followers of Jesus, we engage in battle, but our weapon are not carnal, or of this world, but are spiritual. Ephesians 6:10-19
Abram gave a tithe to Melchizedek.

Jesus, High Priest after the order of Melchizedek

The name Melchizedek means King of Righteousness.
Salem means “Peace” so Melchizedek was King of Peace also.
Hebrews 5:1-11
Hebrews 6:19-7
Aaron was called by God to be a priest.
Aaron, the brother of Moses was a Levite.
He was a descendant of Levi.
The entire tribe of Levi was called to minister in the temple.
Jesus is a priest after the order of Melchizedek.
Psalm 110:4 “The Lord has sworn and will not relent, You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
Jesus came through the line of Judah not Levi.
Jesus is the King of Righteousness.
Jesus taught the highest standards of Righteousness, in regards to anger, lust, forgiving others, permanence of marriage, how we treat the poor, money etc.
Jesus is the King of Peace also.
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Jesus taught and practiced peace and non-resistance.
Jesus’s priesthood is not based on genealogy, but on the power of an endless life. Hebrews 7:16
Jesus’s priesthood is greater than the Levitical one, because Melchizedek was priest to Abraham, (the Levites are descended through Abraham).
Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek.
And Levi through Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek. Heb. 7:9,10
Jesus’ priesthood is eternal Heb. 7:3
The change of priesthood ushered in the new and better covenant. Heb. 7:12,22
Melchizedek offered bread and wine.
Jesus offered his body and blood. (A better covenant).
