Luke 21:25-36
Luke 21:25–36 CEB
“There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars. On the earth, there will be dismay among nations in their confusion over the roaring of the sea and surging waves. The planets and other heavenly bodies will be shaken, causing people to faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world. Then they will see the Human One coming on a cloud with power and great splendor. Now when these things begin to happen, stand up straight and raise your heads, because your redemption is near.” Jesus told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see these things happening, you know that God’s kingdom is near. I assure you that this generation won’t pass away until everything has happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will certainly not pass away. “Take care that your hearts aren’t dulled by drinking parties, drunkenness, and the anxieties of day-to-day life. Don’t let that day fall upon you unexpectedly, like a trap. It will come upon everyone who lives on the face of the whole earth. Stay alert at all times, praying that you are strong enough to escape everything that is about to happen and to stand before the Human One.”

Introduction

Here we see some of the details of the coming of Christ. He gives a list of the things which will happen before He returns. God doesn’t want us to be ignorant concerning His coming. Compare this passage to Matthew 24, and 2 Timothy 3:1–5. Then, compare it with your daily newspapers, which show that we are living in the last days, just before the Lord returns. His return could occur at any time.

CHRISTIAN CONTRIBUTION—vv. 1–4

Luke 21:1-4 “Looking up, Jesus saw rich people throwing their gifts into the collection box for the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow throw in two small copper coins worth a penny. He said, “I assure you that this poor widow has put in more than them all. All of them are giving out of their spare change. But she from her hopeless poverty has given everything she had to live on.””
1. Giving—vv. 1–2. Two types of giving: (1) the rich, (2) the widow. She gave two mites—two copper coins.
2. Gifts—vv. 3–5. Percentage wise, the woman gave more than the rich gave.
In giving, it is not how much we give, but what we are unwilling to give. It is not what we give, but what we have left.

CHRIST’S COMING—vv. 5–31

1. Symbol—vv. 5–7. Jesus used the temple as an example of what will happen when He returns. The disciples ask when this great event will take place.
2. Signs—vv. 8–31.
a) First group of signs—vv. 8–11. Note these signs: Deception, wars, earthquakes, famines, signs in the heavens. Look around today, and you see these being fulfilled.
b) Second group of signs—vv. 12–19. Christians will be persecuted, betrayed, and hated. The antichrist forces are at work today, creating bad feeling toward Christians.
c) Third group of signs—vv. 20–24. Military might will increase. Many will be killed, until the time of the Gentiles be fulfilled. All nations will increase their military might.
d) Fourth group of signs—vv. 25–28. Signs in the heavens. Time of distress of nations. Men’s hearts will fail them for fear. The Son of God will come.
e) Fifth sign—vv. 29–31. Sign of the fig tree. When you see the above events happen, you know the end is near!

CHRIST’S CONCERN—vv. 32–38

1. Surety—vv. 32–33. All these events will take place within a generation (note v. 33, showing God’s Word to be true).
2. Slothfulness—vv. 34–35. Be careful of these three sins: surfeiting, drunkenness, and being submerged by cares of this life.
3. Salvation—v. 36. Live so that you are ready for His coming, and thus escape the tribulation.
4. Savior—vv. 37–38. People come to hear Him teach. He goes to the Mount of Olives—perhaps to pray for strength.

Conclusion

The signs of Christ’s return are all around us. However, knowing all the signs is not sufficient—we must be ready to meet Him. A person is ready only when Christ lives within his heart. His coming is near—be ready to meet Him. His coming will be unexpected. It will be quick. Now is the time to prepare.
