Child is Born and A Son Is Given

This prophetic message of hope describes the Messiah. He would bring hope to a hopeless creation. Have you ever stopped to think that if you could have the best life this world could offer, you could only have it for about 70-100 years and then it would end. Compared to the hope we have in Jesus, this would be tragic. The hope we have in Jesus is one that is everlasting. It is living in worship, purpose, and the best life ever forever.

This is why people that only have this world, may seem to be happy and content, but deep inside they know that it will not last. Only a life lived in a relationship with Jesus Christ is one of hope peace and true joy. This is the gift of the Father to a fallen humanity.

Today I want to look at how God’s gift is the best gift ever given. The Bible says that unto us a child was born and a son was given. This reveals the humanity and divinity of Jesus.

Unto us a child is born

Jesus was born as a human, lived as a human, and died as a human. This is important because he identifies with us perfectly as humans because he was one.

God did not send Jesus as an adult. He went through the way we all got here. the only exception was, He was conceived by the Holy Spirit. He grew as a fetus in Mary’s womb. He went through birth and was totally defendant on Mary and Joseph for His care. ( I find it interesting that though He depended on Mary and Joseph for His care, he carried the weight of the world on His shoulders)

He went through all phases of life. Infant, child, teenager, and adult. He dealt with the temptations and struggles that we all face during these phases of life. The only difference is He did it perfectly, without sin. This means that anything that we can bring to Him, He perfectly understands because he has been through it.

Finally, He died a real death. He was dead for three days. When they hung him on the cross, there He died. He was placed in a tomb and His body laid there lifeless for three days. He knew what it would be like to enter the last season of life.

Unto us a Son was given.

The reason the Bible says that a son was not born unto us is because He already existed as God the Son. God chose to give us His Son for our salvation. He sent His Son to become a man so He could pay the debt of our sin on the cross of Calvary. This would restore the relationship between humanity and God. Just as God loved the Son, He loved us.

John 17:22–24 NASB95

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. “Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

Jesus desires that we spend eternity with Him, enjoying the Love of the Father.

Because Jesus is a gift that is given that is both fully human and fully God, He delivers a practical blessing to all who make Him Lord and Savior of their lives.

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Wonderful Counselor

A counselor is a person trained to give guidance on personal, social, or psychological problems.. The word wonderful means extremely good or marvelous. So the Jesus is one who gives extremely good guidance on personal, social, or psychological problems.

One may ask how can he do this when He is not here. The red letters in the gospels and Revelation are the guidance that we need in several matters. the rest of the Bible is also written by Him. The Bible is the single greatest counseling book ever written.

If that is not enough, He has also put within believers His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enables us to understand and apply the counsel the Bible gives us. He indeed is the wonderful counselor.

Mighty God

Brian Bill says, “He stands for us as “Mighty God.” The word “mighty” means “strong one” or the “powerful, valiant warrior.” In Isaiah 9, the adjective “mighty” literally means, the “God-hero.” Jesus is the hero of the Scripture story! David asks the question in Psalm 24:8: “Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle.” He is profound in His counsel and He has the power to accomplish what He wills.

This facet of His name tells us Jesus is not only the Son of God; He is also God the Son. The Baby born in the feeding trough is also the King of glory. Or to say it another way: “The humble Carpenter of Nazareth is also the Mighty Architect of the Universe.”

Jesus can manage anything because He is mighty. He healed the lame, the blind and the sick. He calmed the storm. He brought Lazarus back from the grave. Therefore, He can do the impossible in your life right now. He will give you victory over whatever you’re struggling with today. Let Him fight your battles as you honor Him as your Holy Hero. Worship Him as your warrior and praise Him for His power.

Remember the words spoken by the angel to Mary in Luke 1:37: “For nothing is impossible with God.” Ray Pritchard writes: “As the Wonderful Counselor, He makes the plans; as the Mighty God, He makes the plans work.”

Eternal Father

This deals with us relationally. First He is eternal. This means that He has no beginning or end. Father loves their child. It is not based on their behavior, but in what a father does because of who he is. A good father never looses love for his child, no matter what they do. He may not approve, but never stops loving. He cares for the well-being of his child.

The story is told A college student named Bill, with unruly hair, a holey T-shirt, old jeans and shoes with no socks, recently became a Christian. Located next to campus was a church that wanted to develop a ministry to students but didn’t know how to go about it. One day Bill decided to go to church there. He walked in late, wearing his everyday wardrobe. He couldn’t find a seat because the church was full.

People noticed him walking down the center aisle and became uncomfortable. Seeing no seats anywhere, when Bill got up to the front, he just sat down right on the floor. While this was perfectly acceptable at a college fellowship, this just wasn’t done in church. The congregation became visibly uptight, tension filling the air. And then people noticed a deacon in his eighties slowly making his way to Bill. He was a distinguished man with silver-gray hair and a three-piece suit. He walked with a cane. As he made his way to Bill, the congregation was relieved and most thought to themselves, “I’m glad somebody is going to tell that kid he can’t sit there!”

It took some time for the deacon to reach the young man. The church became utterly silent except for the clicking of the man’s cane on the tiled floor. All eyes focused on him. When he finally reached the college kid, he dropped his cane and with great difficulty he lowered himself to the floor and asked, “May I sit with you?”

God is like the old man that just comes to us and says “may I sit with you?”

Prince of Peace

Jesus is the one who brings true peace to the soul. John 14:27

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

The peace that Jesus gives is an internal peace that captures our soul. The reason we lack peace is because of self. We try to establish it in many different ways such as financial prosperity, good health, solid relationships, and good reputations. None of these are bad things, as a matter of fact they are all good things, but they should never be what you root your peace in. None of these things are stable enough to bring you lasting peace.

A relationship with Jesus is the only thing that is everlasting and will never let you down. Hebrews 13:5

Hebrews 13:5–6 NASB95

Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?”

Any other thing that you root your peace in can forsake or desert you. Jesus will never. The Lord is always there to help in times of trouble.

Everlasting Kingdom

Jesus promises an everlasting Kingdom. He will reign as king forever. It will be founded on peace, righteousness, and justice.

There will be no fear in heaven. It will be a place of perpetual peace. There are no more worries or stress. It is a place of perfect tranquility and peace

It will be established on righteousness. Everything in heaven will be right. It will not be tainted by sin because sin will not be there. Everyone will be living with perfect love towards one another.

Justice means Perfect moral behavior. We will live without impure words, thoughts or actions. We will become what we desire to be today, but cannot.

He will be our king forever and ever.
