JESUS AND CONFLICT

WHEN YOU THINK OF JESUS WHAT DO YOU THINK OF? JESUS WAS NO STRANGER TO CONFLICT.

WAS JESUS NICE? NICE PEOPLE AVOID CONFLICT.

THAT WASN'T AN OPTION FOR JESUS.

HIS STORY BEGINS WITH GENOCIDE.

HIS MINISTRY BEGINS WITH A CONFRONTATION WITH THE DEVIL IN THE DESERT.

WE HAVE TO LET GO OF THIS IDEALIZED VISION OF JESUS WANDERING THROUGH THE QUAINT MIDDLE EASTERN VILLAGES AND MARKETS.

JESUS HIMSELF WON'T LET US! LISTEN TO HIS WORDS IN MATTHEW 10:34-36:

Matthew 10:34–36 ESV

34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

36 And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.

HE DIDN'T COME TO BRING PEACE HE CAME TO MAKE IT.

SPEAKING OF HOMEGROWN CONFLICT LET'S GO TO LUKE 4.

Luke 4:16–30 ESV

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.

17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”

23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘ “Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’ ”

24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land,

26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.

27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath.

29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff.

30 But passing through their midst, he went away.

Luke 4:31–37 ESV

31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath,

32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority.

33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,

34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”

35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm.

36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”

37 And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

JESUS HAS THE POWER TO SET PEOPLE FREE FROM THE POWERS.

CONTEXT: JESUS’ DISCIPLES WERE WALKING THRU A GRAINFIELD ON THE SABBATH. THEY EAT SOME GRAIN. THE PHARISEES LOSE IT. JESUS CONFRONTS THEM AND CLAIMS HE IS LORD OF THE SABBATH.

THE PHARISEES TRY TO TRAP HIM. THERE IS A MAN WITH A WITHERED HAND PRESENT SO THEY ASK IF IT IS LAWFUL TO HEAL ON THE SABBATH. JESUS DESTROYS THEM BY THEIR OWN RULES – HOW CAN THEY HELP A SHEEP ON THE SABBATH BUT NOT A MAN. HE HEALS THE DUDE. THEY BEGIN TO PLOT HOW TO DESTROY HIM. JESUS CONTINUES ON HEALING THE MASSES.

Matthew 12:22–30 ESV

22 Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw.

23 And all the people were amazed, and said, “Can this be the Son of David?”

24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.”

25 Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.

26 And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?

27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.

28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

29 Or how can someone enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house.

30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

JESUS CONFRONTS THE POWERS TO SET THE PEOPLE FREE.

JESUS CONFRONTS THE PEOPLE ABOUT THEIR COLLUSION WITH THE POWERS.

Mark 10:17–27 ESV

17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.

19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’ ”

20 And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.”

21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

23 And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God!

25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?”

27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”

JESUS CALLED HIM OUT WHERE HE NEEDED IT.

WOULD YOU NOT GIVE UP EVERYTHING FOR A SICK CHILD/SPOUSE? WHY NOT FOR GOD?

WE NEED TO BE CONFRONTED BY JESUS. WE NEED TO BE CALLED OUT BY HIM SO THAT WE MAY REPENT AND RUN TO JESUS.

Hebrews 4:15–16 ESV

15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
