Did your parents ever tell you to be a good example?
I think older siblings hear this the most.
Be a good example.
Why do we say this?
Because the younger kids are watching the older kids.
This can be good or bad… My brother taught me to climb on top of the unattached garage when i was a kid.
I taught my sister how to light matches.
All Christians have the obligation of setting a Christlike example.
Let’s read from our text.
This text is filled with commands.
I want to show you a visual of this.
Scripture Pic
Everything highlight yellow and bold red text is a command.
An imperative verb in the Greek.
These commands are where we need to give our attention.
Paul is giving this charge to Timothy and he says Command and Teach these things.
What are these things?
Correct doctrine and teaching.
Preaching the gospel.
Protect against heresy.
Train in godliness.
While this is a command from Paul to Timothy we all must be on guard against heresy and train ourselves in godliness.
Our big Idea that I mentioned earlier is:
All Christians have the obligation of setting a Christlike example.
Let’s answer two questions:
In what way do we set an example and how do we do set an example?
Let’s answer the first question.
Your life is an example.
We need to remember this as believers.
It is of utmost importance.
When you claim to be a Christian, others are watching your life.
It is automatically an example.
Kind of like older siblings… the younger ones are watching.
Younger believers are watching, the unbelieving world is watching.
What areas of our life are important?
Watch what you say.
Is your speech Christlike?
What about your social media?
Amazing what people will say online but may not say in person....
How you say something matters as much as what you say.
Watch how you act.
I was at a high school girls basketball game once and I was sitting next to a man whose daughter was playing in the game.
The referees were less than stellar and letting a lot of contact occur.
At one point his daughter was fouled very physically and she fell to the floor.
The man erupted like Mt Vesuvius.
He was so bad they threw him out of the gym and off school property.
He was the chairman of deacons at the church.
Watch how you act.
His witness took a blow that day.
I think Eph 4:26 applies in this case.
“Be angry and do not sin.”
Watch what you say and watch how you act.
Let love, faith, and purity be on display.
Love for people, trust in God, and a godly lifestyle.
Remember training for godliness...
I had the privilege of working with a retired evangelist named Bob Elliott who was an interim pastor at a church I served.
He was the first pastor to mentor me, he taught me so much and was an incredible example.
Brother Bob exhibited love, faith and purity.
Remember, your life is an example.
This answers the first question, what way do we set an example?
Let’s go to the second.
How do we set a good example?
Devote yourself to the word.
Vs 13.
Remember - in the first century most people were illiterate.
And only the Temple and local synagogue would have had a copy of the Scriptures.
The Scripture was the Old Testament.
So they devoted themselves to public reading so everyone could hear it.
This is why we read a Psalm every Sunday // Teach through a book of the bible // Why we have Sunday morning and Wednesday night Bible studies.
Encourage one another with the word
Teach one another the word.
When you devote yourself to the word it works on your life.
2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
It teaches you.
It exposes and convicts you.
It rightly corrects and improves you.
It trains you for righteous living.
When the word is working on you it helps you be a good example.
Finally,
Keep a close watch on your life.
Both your inner and outer life.
Constant work and careful inspection.
Here is a helpful Psalm.
Keep a closer inspection of your life than someone else's life.
Persist!
Don’t stop.
One final thought...
You are never too young, or too old, to set a Christlike example for others.
