Text: Hebrews 2:9-10
Hebrews 2:8–10 AV
8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. 10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
I read from the KJV. Other translations will render it differently, calling Jesus:
The originator
The author
The founder
The pioneer ( a favorite)
The perfect leader
The One whom leads people to salvation
The Source of their salvation
The Initiator
I am not sure why the KJV translators translated the exact same Greek word, (ar-khay-gos’) 2 different ways in the same book.
In our text we see it translated Captain, but in Heb 12:2 we see it translated “author.”
Hebrews 12:2 NASB95
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
In both cases the Greek word is speaking of a leader.
The UBS Handbook helps translators translate the original Greek and Hebrew into another language.
It says:

The one who leads probably implies “who has begun to lead.” This phrase may refer either to God (as RSV implies) or to Jesus (as TEV states).

The one who leads them may be expressed as “the one who shows them the way.” But it may be more accurately rendered as “the one who goes ahead of others to show them the way.” This may be expressed idiomatically in some languages as “one who is the thorn-treader,” that is to say, the one who goes ahead down the path and thus is the one who treads on any thorns.

Jesus, as the Captain of our salvation certainly tread on a LOT of thorns for our sake.
To bring many children into the glory of His salvation.
Jesus’ purpose on earth was to lead us into salvation. Tom be our SOURCE of salvation. As says:
Hebrews 5:9 (NASB95)
9 And having been made perfect [complete - the same Greek word in Heb 2:10], He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
So, because He was willing to suffer, Jesus became “complete” (perfect) as our Captain, as the One who goes before us.
So, this evening, as we seek the Lord in prayer...
We cry out to the One who leads in salvation, because He led THROUGH suffering.
Hebrews 4:15–16 NASB95
15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
As we draw near with confidence, as we enter into the Lord’s Presence, let us also remember Joshua’s attitude when he came into contact with the Captain of the Lord’s host
Joshua 5:13–15 NASB95
13 Now it came about when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand, and Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us or for our adversaries?” 14 He said, “No; rather I indeed come now as captain of the host of the Lord.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, “What has my lord to say to his servant?” 15 The captain of the Lord’s host said to Joshua, “Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
Let us fall before the Captain of our salvation who is also the Captain of ALL the Angel Armies of the Lord and let us hear what He has to say to us as His servants.
Let us not only hear, but let us be obedient to what He says.
James 1:22 NASB95
22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
James 1:25 NASB95
25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.
Lord, help us hear the Holy Spirit and align our lives in what You say!
