INTRODUCTION
We will celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday later this week. This is a time of year for us to reflect on all of the blessings that God has bestowed upon us. Some of us have faced difficult times over the past year. Some of us have lost loved ones. Some of us have been affected by covid-19 and other sickness. Some of us have experienced heartbreak and suffered through broken relationships. But no matter what we’ve been through, we all still have so much to thank God for! He has been so good to us! Think about all the things that God has done for you! Our hearts should be overflowing with gratitude toward God today when we think about who He is and all that He has done for us. And our gratitude toward God should express itself in thanksgiving, praise, and worship for who He is, for what He has done, and for what He is going to do! And Thanksgiving should not be just one day on the calendar. We should live our lives in such a way that we demonstrate thanksgiving, praise, and worship to God every day of the year. So I want to talk to you this morning about Building an Attitude of Gratitude.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 100:1–5 NKJV
1 Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! 2 Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. 3 Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. 4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. 5 For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.
MESSAGE
The Spirit of Praise (v. 1-2)
When we come to church, we should come in the right spirit. A lot of times, however, we show up to God’s house with all kinds of spirits on us other than the spirit of praise (spirits like anger, frustration, tiredness, distraction, or complacency). Before we walk through the doors, we should make sure that our hearts are already tuned into the Holy Spirit and ready to pour out praises to God. We should come in the spirit of praise. But we should also have the spirit of praise everyday, not just on Sunday.
Shouting Spirit (v. 1)
We should make a joyful shout (noise) to the Lord.
A shout is not quiet.
The word here means a shout that “pierces the eardrum.”
We are to participate in the public praise of God.
The Walls of Jericho
Serving Spirit (v. 2a)
The word “serve” here means to “worship.”
We are to worship with gladness, not out of compulsion.
Our joyful shouts of praise will overflow out of a heart that worships God with gladness.
Singing Spirit (v. 2b)
We don’t just sing the praises of God in church services to pass the time.
We sing to bring glory to God.
When our hearts are filled with joy and gladness for who God is and what He has done for us, we will have a song in our hearts that will burst forth out of our lips in praises to God.
The spirit of praise can bring us victory over the enemy.
Jehoshaphat's Army (2 Chronicles 20)
The Submission of Praise (v. 3)
In order to bring the right heart of gratitude to God, we must come in humble submission to Him. It is about truly recognizing who He is, what He has done, and what He is able to do.
God’s Person
The psalmist tells us that we are to know God.
Do you know who God is?
Acts 17 - An Altar to the Unknown God
He is the only One True Living God.
God’s Purpose
The psalmist reminds us that we owe our existence to God.
We are what we are and have what we have only by the grace of God.
Without Him we are nothing and we have nothing.
God’s Promise
The psalmist reminds us that we are the sheep of His pasture.
Our position in Christ comes with a lot of promises.
He is our Savior, Redeemer, Deliverer, Healer, Protector, Hope, Guide, Soon Coming King.
10 Lepers healed, but only one returned to give thanks (Luke 17)
The Sacrifice of Praise (v. 4-5)
One of things we have been praying about in the Prayer of Jabez is “Lord, that Your hand would be with me.” In other words, God let your presence be with me wherever I go. And the psalmist here tells us how we can enter the presence of God. We enter into the His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise. This is a picture of the Temple.
The Temple and God’s Presence
The psalmist then gives us three reasons why we are to praise God.
God’s Goodness
We should praise God because He has been so good to us.
We should praise God for His blessings on us.
We should praise God even when life seems bad, because He is still good.
David running from Absalom (Psalm 63)
Psalm 63:3 NKJV
3 Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise You.
God’s Grace
We should praise God because His mercy endures forever.
We should praise God because He has saved us by His grace.
We should praise God because His mercies are new and fresh every morning.
God’s Guarantee
The psalmist reminds us that God’s truth will endure to all generations (forever).
We should praise God because His promises are yes and amen.
We should praise God because He will never fail us.
