Macho Man or Man of God?
Macho Man or Man of God?
For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called.
But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;
and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are,
that no flesh should glory in His presence.
God has chosen the weak things of this world to confound the mighty
What is weak in the eyes of man can become mighty in the hands of God!
What do we desire to be—macho men or mighty men?
Samson was a macho man
Samson was stronger than any man who has ever lived.
Samson’s strength was due to his covenant with God.
Samson took his Nazarite dedication to God lightly.
He liked pagan women.
He defiled himself with corpses. (Judges 14:9 ate honey from a lion)
Samson gave his strength to a woman named Delilah. (Judges 16:4-20)
Proverbs 31:3 (NKJV) “Do not give your strength to women, nor your ways to that which destroys kings.”
Proverbs 7:24-27 (NKJV) "Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: 25 Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, do not stray into her paths; 26 For she has cast down many wounded, and all who were slain by her were strong men. 27 Her house is the way to hell, descending to the chambers of death."
Sampson revealed to Delilah the secret of his strength.
Delilah betrayed Samson to his enemy.
The consequences for being a macho man rather than a man of God.
Judges 16:21 (NKJV) “Then the Philistines took him and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza. They bound him with bronze fetters, and he became a grinder in the prison.”
Blinding: You will lose your vision. Samson was blinded by men because he refused to keep his eyes on God.
Binding: You will be bound by your enemy. Samson was bound by men because he refused to be bound to God.
Grinding: You will be forced to do what you do not want to do. Sampson was forced to labor for men because he refused to labor for God.
Although Samson ended as a mighty man, he suffered great loss during his days as a macho man.
Gideon (Judges 6:1-16)
We have the problem. God has the solution.
Israel feared the gods of the Amorites.
The Midianites are too strong.
Where is the God of miracles? God has forsaken us!
We see our weakness
Gideon is threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites
“My clan is the weakest in Manasseh!”
“I am the least in my father’s house!”
God sees our potential!
“The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!”
“Go in this might of yours and you shall save Israel.”
“Have I not sent you?”
“I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man!”
We need men like Gideon who will believe God and conquer their fear!
David’s Mighty Men (1 Samuel 22:1-2)
Four hundred men gathered to David who were
Distressed (in a painful situation)
In debt (obligated to others)
Discontented (bitter of soul—life has done you wrong!)
They saw their weakness. David saw their potential!
Some of these were among David’s mighty men.
We need mighty men of valor like David who can build an army from the outcasts of the land!
God will take the weak and turn them into mighty men!
The least
The fearful
The distressed
The indebted
The discontent
Response to the Word
Do you want to be a macho man or a mighty man?
Do you want to be a macho man or a man of God?
