Galatians 5:22-23
Commentators are almost unanimous that faith here, does not mean faith in God or in the Gospel.
The word faith is used three different ways even in the book of Galatians.
Galatians 1:23 refers to “the faith”, in context of the Christian gospel.
Galatians 3:14 refers to faith for salvation.
Galatians 5:22 refers to trustworthiness or faithfulness in fulfilling our Christian duties.
πίστις pistis – assurance, belief, faith, fidelity – used 244 times in 228 verses.
In Romans in 35 verses found 40 times
In Hebrews in 31 verses found 32 times
In Galatians in 20 verses found 22 times
πιστός pistos – trustworthy, trustful, faithful – used 67 times in 62 verses.
We talk of dealing with people “in good faith.”
In a sense, our faith should produce faithfulness.
Faithfulness is the Christian character produced by the Holy Spirit, enabling us to be reliable or dependable.

There seems to be a short supply of faithfulness today.
A lack of faithfulness is seen in the corporate world, the family realm, and sometimes in the church.
The Holy Spirit, however, can make us trustworthy or reliable.
Faithfulness is doing our duty until our duty is done.
Every great servant of God has been a faithful servant, including the Lord Jesus Christ.
We need the kind of faithfulness the Holy Spirit can produce.
This is how the disciples did it…
Think about before the Holy Spirit came…the garden when Jesus prayed, they fell asleep…they were not faithful.
The Disciples of Christ found the Holy Spirit made the difference for them in the area of faithfulness.
Then came the day of Pentecost and the filling of the Holy Spirit.
These same men were faithful witnesses and ultimately died a faithful martyr’s death.
Many of the early missionaries exhibited great faithfulness.
William Carey, the great missionary to India saw few early results to his labor.
He wrote to a friend, “Pray for us that we may be faithful to the end.”

The Faithfulness of God
A. Faithful in His Attributes
Even when we are faithless, God is faithful
1.
He is faithful during temptation.
2.
He is faithful during trials.
A mother and her little four-year-old daughter were preparing to retire for the night.
The child was afraid of the dark, and the mother, on this occasion alone with the child, felt fearful also.
When the light was out, the child caught a glimpse of the moon outside the window.
“Mother,” she asked, “is the moon God’s light?” “Yes,” said the mother.
The next question was, “Will God put out His light and go to sleep?”
The mother replied, “No, my child, God never goes to sleep.”
Then out of the simplicity of a child’s faith, she said that which gave reassurance to the fearful mother, “Well, as long as God is a wake, there is no sense both of us staying awake.”
B. Faithful in His Word

The Fervency of God’s People
Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the scouts tells a story in 'Scouting for Boys' of two frogs, which accidentally jumped into a bowl of cream.
One of them tried to get out for a short while but after that he judged it useless to try any longer.
He sank to the bottom of the bowl and drowned.
The other one tried and tried although there was not much hope to get out of the bowl.
But it happened to be that since he kept trying to get out, he stirred the cream into butter.
And sitting on a knob of butter he was able to jump out of the bowl.
And so he survived.
"So keep smiling when things get rough and you'll succeed, " Baden-Powell says to his scouts.
A. God Requires Faithfulness
God does not require talent.
He only requires our faithfulness.
Old Faithful – Not old Un-Reliable
1. Faithful in our work places
Christopher Columbus many times in his journal simply noted, “Today we sailed on.”
2. Faithful to our families
3. Faithful in our stewardship
As we are faithful with this world’s goods, we will be faithful in spiritual matters as well.
4. Faithful in our attendance
I don’t know why some people change churches—what difference does it make which one you stay home from?
B. God Produces Faithfulness
The Holy Spirit is in our lives to make our character more like Jesus.
Faithfulness could not describe Jesus any better.
Faithfulness is a fruit of the Spirit filled Christian
How many of you have found yourself doing something that you knew God put it on your heart?
That is the fruit of the Spirit – Faithfulness!

Our Examination of Faithfulness
One day we will be examined for our faithfulness

A. We All Have Different Opportunities
Those servants who had invested wisely were excited, those servants who had squandered were sad.
(verses 20-21)
The talents in this parable showed that unequal gifts, if used with equal faithfulness, will be equally rewarded.
I don’t have those opportunities, or talents, or money…it doesn’t matter.
B. We Will All Be Examined According to Our Faithfulness
We are not called to be successful: we are called to be faithful.
God gives those faithful people a crown of life…what a privilege!
Conclusion
Faithfulness is not always easy, but Christ commands us to walk in faithfulness by His Spirit.
Perhaps, if we keep in our minds the ultimate goal of pleasing our Lord and Saviour, we will find it a little easier to remain faithful in these difficult times.
