The Holiness of God

What comes to your mind when we say the word of holiness ?
What is holiness?
Some people think its a person who carries a big bible, dressed in pure white robes.
Pharisees
Read Isaiah 6 - The world seemed like it was falling apart. 52 years the godly king Uzziah reigned and just died.
Isaiah is a prophet.
Prophet Speaks to the people from God.
Isaiah is freaking out - anxious about what is going to happen.
God answers Isaiah by revealing himself.
Earthly king died - Heavenly King is still reigning.

Isaiah saw things about God.

Isaiah 6:1-4
Isaiah 6:1–4 NIV
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
Isaiah saw that God is holy.
Isaiah saw that God is full of glory.
Isaiah 6:5
Isaiah 6:5 NIV
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
Isaiah saw things about himself.
He saw in comparison to this holy God, he was so unclean.
When we see God’s holiness, we see just how sinful we really are.
The clearer we see God, the clearer we see ourselves - that prepares us for serving him.
Romans 3:10
Romans 3:10 NIV
As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one;
Romans 3:23
Romans 3:23 NIV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Isaiah saw God makes people Holy.
Isaiah 6:6-7
Isaiah 6:6–7 NIV
Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
Isaiah saw that God makes people Holy.
The amazing thing about God is that he shows us our sin - then takes action himself to deal with it.
God deals with people’s sins.
People can not deal with their sin on their own efforts. - try, emptiness.
1 Peter 3:18
1 Peter 3:18 NIV
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.
Romans 5:6-8
Romans 5:6–8 NIV
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Isaiah experienced that God cleans you up before sending you out.
God removed Isaiahs guilt then sent him out to use him to speak to the Israelites.
Gods message would not always be welcomed by everyone.

WHAT IS HOLINESS?

Lots of people think holiness has to do with the do’s and don’ts if life.
EX. dont drink, dont smoke, rules and lots of rules to follow..
Just like the Pharisees of Jesus day.
Holiness is a nature of God.
The word holiness means “being set apart
Being set apart from sin
Being separate - special
God is special and separated from everything else.
1. God the Father
Psalm 22:3
Psalm 22:3 NIV
Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises.
Proverbs 9:10
Proverbs 9:10 NIV
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Psalm 22:3 & Proverbs 9:10
God the Father was called “the Holy One”
Jesus was called the Holy One.
Luke 1:35
Demons recognizing Jesus as the Holy One Mark 1:24
Mark 1:24 NIV
“What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
The Spirit of God is Holy
The Spirit of God is called the Holy Spirit.

Gods Holiness Makes Us Whole

God’s holiness does not stand in isolation.
- He’s involved with people lives.
Leviticus 11:45
Leviticus 11:45 NIV
I am the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.
God says, To be holy as I am holy.
God tells us to be holy and then makes a way for it to happen.
The Handbook of Bible Promises God’s Holiness and Us

By giving his own Son to die on the cross to bear the punishment for our sin, God himself makes us clean so that we can now come into his holy presence

Isaiah 53:4-6
Isaiah 53:4–6 (NIV)
Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
GODS Holiness and us:
His holiness is his utter purity and his just and perfect rule.
Stands away and contrast from our sinfulness.
God cannot look on evil.
Jesus on the cross, “Father why have you forsaken me”
The Father looked away from the sin that was being poured out on His son.
MAIN POINTS: TAKE AWAYS
1. I cannot hide my sin from a holy God.
Hebrews 4:13
Hebrews 4:13 NIV
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
a. God does not deal with us as our sins deserve.
Wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life.
Holiness is not so much about what I do on the outside as what I am like on the inside.
How we behave in our body is a reflection of what we believe on the inside.
Mark 7:20-23
Mark 7:20–23 NIV
He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”
God desires the outside to be a genuine reflection of what is on the inside.
Not a cover up.
Everything will be exposed in a way to find you out.

3. Encounters with the holiness of God are for our good and not our harm.

Isaiah felt like running from God’s holiness.
God encountered Isaiah in holiness to reveal himself to him and to change him.
Don’t run or avoid God but allow God to change you and fill the void.
Isaiah 35:8-10
Isaiah 35:8–10 (NIV)
And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way. The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it. No lion will be there, nor any ravenous beast; they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there, and those the Lord has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.
Holiness cannot begin to grow in me until I decide to follow this God and this life of holiness.
I have to decide to follow God and His holiness.
