Intro

Thank them for being present
Everyone can facilitate is they feel led or communicate what topics need to be discussed.
wanted to talk about topics that is common for all of us like our Family Relationships
and still have it be in concert with what Bishop is teaching
Bishop is teaching the concept of surrender out of
Luke 9:23 “23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.”
the idea of self denial means that you give up a life that is about yourself and you place Christ in the center of your life
When you are in your 40’s and 50’s we can’t afford to be self-centered
three Generations The one that came before us depend on us for support
Elderly Parents and our Children especially the adult ones
the question is what does the word have to say about our relationships with our Elderly Parents?
Honoring Your Parents is a Commandment from God
Mark 7:9-13
Mark 7:9–13 NASB95
9 He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. 10 “For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to be put to death’; 11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),’ 12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”
Here is the Situation
the Pharisees asked Jesus why his followers don’t wash their hands before they eat
Jesus calls them Hypocrites
then tells them that the honor God with their lips but your heart is far from God
complication
Then he uses this example of how they are really dishonoring their Parents by following this tradition
They thought Corban was good enough to satisfy Honor Father and Mother they invalidate the word of God
Corban is Gift of God or offering in Church. like modern day social security
I be like if you knew your Parent was struggling and you were in position to help and you did nothing to help but insisted that you were actually honoring your Parents
in the middle of a pandemic make your immobile parent ride the public transportation to get medicine
Or if My Mother called, I know she’s lonely and I didn’t pick up the phone
Question What does that say about a person that would do this to their Mom or Dad?
We must allow the Lord to work on our Heart
Jesus is not just addressing this one commandment.
He is addressing the root cause of the problem and that is in the heart.
The Honor for our Parents should come from the heart
It is very easy to not show honor
all they have to do is say something wrong to you or do something that upsets you
they say things out of turn sometimes, they aren't perfect
When they do you must not allow that ill feeling to get into your heart you must forgive!
if you dishonor your parents you are also dishonoring God
We must do things to protect our hearts!
same as some of the others in the 10 Commandments
you should not kill or you should not commit adultery
I don’t have to physically do anything but I could commit a murder in my heart if I hate my brother
I don’t have to physically touch anyone but if I look at a woman to lust I commit adultery with her in my heart
Were is the line between Honor Parents and Leave and Cleave?
when you’re married the two become one flesh and you make those decisions with your husband
Line between Honor and Leave and Cleave
1 Timothy 5: 3-10
1 Timothy 5:3–10 NASB95
3 Honor widows who are widows indeed; 4 but if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God. 5 Now she who is a widow indeed and who has been left alone, has fixed her hope on God and continues in entreaties and prayers night and day. 6 But she who gives herself to wanton pleasure is dead even while she lives. 7 Prescribe these things as well, so that they may be above reproach. 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 9 A widow is to be put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one man, 10 having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.
there is discernment involved with this
Verse 4 tells us where the line is. Yes there is a religious and moral obligation but your household comes first
verse 5 A woman who has been left alone
verse 6 wanton pleasure is someone who lives a self-gratification lifestyle
application
My Father-In Law demonstrated setting aside personal feelings about his Father to take care of him during his last days on Earth
we do what we can because of love for our parents and love for God
certain circumstances we use discernment and the leading of the spirit
