Opening Scripture

About that time King Herod violently attacked some who belonged to the church, 2 and he executed James, John’s brother, with the sword. 3 When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter too, during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. 4 After the arrest, he put him in prison and assigned four squads of four soldiers each to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover. 5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was praying fervently to God for him.

PETER RESCUED

6 When Herod was about to bring him out for trial, that very night Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while the sentries in front of the door guarded the prison. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell. Striking Peter on the side, he woke him up and said, “Quick, get up!” And the chains fell off his wrists. 8 “Get dressed,” the angel told him, “and put on your sandals.” And he did. “Wrap your cloak around you,” he told him, “and follow me.” 9 So he went out and followed, and he did not know that what the angel did was really happening, but he thought he was seeing a vision. 10 After they passed the first and second guards, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened to them by itself. They went outside and passed one street, and suddenly the angel left him.

11 When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s grasp and from all that the Jewish people expected.” 12 As soon as he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was called Mark, where many had assembled and were praying. 13 He knocked at the door of the outer gate, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer. 14 She recognized Peter’s voice, and because of her joy, she did not open the gate but ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the outer gate.

15 “You’re out of your mind!” they told her. But she kept insisting that it was true, and they said, “It’s his angel.” 16 Peter, however, kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were amazed.

17 Motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. “Tell these things to James and the brothers,” he said, and he left and went to another place.

Verse 1-2 About that time King Herod violently attacked some who belonged to the church, 2 and he executed James, John’s brother, with the sword.

King Herod only had interest for political purposes.
Like today some politicians come into communities with the only interest of their.
He understood partnerships and was gaining the trust of the Jews.
How evil were these Jews that when they had an opportunity for something positive they use tis privilege to kill a person.
MArk 10:35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached him and said, “Teacher, we want you to do whatever we ask you.” 36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked them. 37 They answered him, “Allow us to sit at your right and at your left in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup I drink or to be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” 39 “We are able,” they told him. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with. 40 But to sit at my right or left is not mine to give; instead, it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

Verses 3-5 3 When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter too, during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. 4 After the arrest, he put him in prison and assigned four squads of four soldiers each to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover. 5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was praying fervently to God for him.

This manipulation and propaganda was able to turn Jews to turn to faith in Christ.
Herod could have easily handled this but what does he do? he brings peter for a political move to show them that he's on your side.
Also to strike fear in other Christians and turn Jews away from joining the church.
HE was placed in prison because it was festival time and according the law you couldn't try a person. Deu 16:1-12
of course Herod assigned guards. normally 4 people but for this case 16 because has away of slipping away.
One side theirs opposition on the other side is prayer.
if God is to answer prayer, he must be pressed and persuaded by spectacular feats of devotion. At the same time, if the church knew how its Lord himself had prayed, it would have had to pray: ‘Nevertheless, not our will, but yours, be done’

Verses 6-10 When Herod was about to bring him out for trial, that very night Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while the sentries in front of the door guarded the prison.

There were two guards chained to both sides of Peter.
And Peter is through this stressful and uncomfortable sleeping!
How Peter, ive been a situation like this beofre and the lord brought me out and because I know what he's able of I can sleep!
There was light shining that only PEter can see. Faith will cause you to see things that no one else can see.
The angel woke him and released him right in the middle of trouble.
God will make a way out that no one else can see.
Get dressed!

Verses 11-12 When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s grasp and from all that the Jewish people expected.” 12 As soon as he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was called Mark, where many had assembled and were praying.

Luke describes it as if Peter is coming out of a dream.

Versus 13-15  He knocked at the door of the outer gate, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer. 14 She recognized Peter’s voice, and because of her joy, she did not open the gate but ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the outer gate. 15 “You’re out of your mind!” they told her. But she kept insisting that it was true, and they said, “It’s his angel.

Like getting a call at 3 am in the morning it's usually not good news.
Rhoda is a young girl and recognizes Peter's distinct voice
She's so excited she forgets to get Peter in
She goes in and they go in a back and forth over what she saw and meanwhile peter is still sitting outside.
They praying for Peter and couldn't believe that God did it.

verses 16-17 Peter, however, kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were amazed. 17 Motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. “Tell these things to James and the brothers,” he said, and he left and went to another place.

He had walked out of prison but couldn't get into a prayer meeting.
