There was a church where the preacher and the song leader were not getting along.
This began to spill over into the worship service.
One week the preacher preached on commitment, and how we should dedicate ourselves to service.
The song leader then led the song, “I Shall Not Be Moved.”
The next Sunday, the preacher preached on giving and how we should gladly give to the work of the Lord.
The song leader then led the song, “Jesus Paid It All.”
The next Sunday, the preacher preached on gossiping and how we should watch our tongues.
The song leader then led the song, “I Love To Tell The Story.”
The preacher became very disgusted over the situation, and the next Sunday he told the congregation he was considering resigning.
The song leader then led the song, “Oh, Why Not Tonight.”
As it came to pass, the preacher resigned and the next week and informed the church that it was Jesus that led him there and it was Jesus that was taking him away.
The song leader then led the song, “What A Friend We Have in Jesus.”.
Historical/Cultural Context -
The book of 1 John is one of the five books in the New Testament that was written by John the Apostle, brother of James.
They were known as the sons of thunder.
This letter was written between A.D. 85 to A.D. 100.
First John was written to a church or group of churches in crisis—churches who were being attacked by false teaching.
Some individuals who had once been associated with the church had accepted heresy and had left the church.
After they left they continued to spread their false teaching to the church.
They went so far as to organize and send out itinerant preachers to various churches with the goal of converting those in the churches to their beliefs.
This created confusion and plunged the churches into crisis.
In response to this situation, John wrote 1 John, following that up with 2 and 3 John.
His goal was to stop this false teaching and to bring comfort to the Christians in these churches.

John the Apostle, also known as the disciple whom Jesus loved, is testifying here to the power and love of our Lord.
In this section he uses phrases that show us he was an eye witness to Christ.
He keeps using phrases like, “which we have seen,” “which we have heard,” “we bear witness.”
He is emphatic in His writing that what he writes is the truth from God and what he writes was inspired and empowered by Holy Spirit.
In the beginning he says, we heard and saw and we have touched and handled.
This bears witness to the fact that Jesus was real and not some specter or spirit, as some were teaching in the church at this time.
He says they handled the Word of Life.
Is he talking about the words of the Bible?
No, the Bible had not been compiled yet.
Was he talking about the Torah, which is the Hebrew scriptures, no; because they had that for centuries and the law did not bring life, but condemned the people with death because they couldn’t keep it perfectly.
Where else do we see this language?
in the Gospel of John.
Turn there with me, or make a note of it in your bulletin.
It will be on the screen
I consider the Gospel of John to be the spiritual Gospel.
I know that the others are spiritual too, but John gives us more insight into the Spiritual underpinnings of the events than, I think, the others do.
Not a hill I am willing to die on, but just my opinion.
John is already reminding them that the Gift of Jesus is eternal life.
That this gift was manifested for us to have fellowship with God, and to one another.
He declares that through this scripture and his reminder of fellowship is so that they may have joy in Christ that will be full.
in other words, John is not writing to condemn them, as it may seem in the section, but so that their life may be full in Christ.
Jesus is life.
Those who possess this life have fellowship with other believers and that fellowship with the Father and Jesus the Saviour.
Multiple times we are told to be of the same mind, think the thoughts of God, be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and have the same attitudes.
Ever met someone in the church who seems to be thinking other things than what everyone else is thinking?
Maybe a little obstinate or arrogant?
These kinds of people, whom you just can’t understand how they come to some conclusions?
Ever notice they are always negative?
It may be that they do not have true fellowship with God and the believers, so they are operating in the flesh and not the Spirit.
How do we get the mind of Christ?
He says to let this mind or let this attitude be in you.
So how does one let it happen?
“washing of water by the word”
In Old Testament times there were ceremonial cleansings that would declare a person clean.
That was a type and foreshadow of the cleansing we have in Christ.
We know that Jesus is The Word and that the Word He speaks is truth and life.
It is about not just reading the Bible, but reading it carefully, reading it in context and meditating on it day and night.
It is also reading it prayerfully and with a spiritual eye that can only be read through the power of God.
Notice He opened their eyes, their understanding to comprehend the scriptures.
If you have never had this experience, this spiritual insight.
#1.
Check your salvation.
#2.
Ask Holy Spirit to open your understanding of the scriptures for application to your life.
James 4:2 tells us that “you do not have because you do not ask.”

One Sunday morning an old cowboy entered a church just before services were to begin.
Although the old man and his clothes were spotlessly clean, he wore jeans, a denim shirt and boots that were very worn and ragged.
In his hand he carried a worn out old hat and an equally worn out Bible.
The church he entered was in a very upscale and exclusive part of the city.
It was the largest and most beautiful church the old cowboy had ever seen.
The people of the congregation were all dressed with expensive clothes and accessories.
As the cowboy took a seat, the others moved away from him.
No one greeted, spoke to, or welcomed him.
They were all appalled at his appearance and did not attempt to hide it.
As the old cowboy was leaving the church, the preacher approached him and asked the cowboy to do him a favor.
"Before you come back in here again, have a talk with God, and ask him what he thinks would be appropriate attire for worship."
The old cowboy assured the preacher he would.
The next Sunday, he showed back up for the services wearing the same ragged jeans, shirt, boots, and hat.
Once again he was completely shunned and ignored.
The preacher again approached the man and said, "I thought I asked you to speak to God before you came back to our church."
"I did," replied the old cowboy.
"If you spoke to God, what did he tell you the proper attire should be for worshiping in here?"
asked the preacher.
"Well, sir, God told me that He didn't have a clue what I should wear.
He said He'd never been in this church."

So now John is gonna hit em with the message that God has asked him to deliver.
“That God is light and Him is no darkness at all.”
That’s kind of a duh statement for you, but now he is going to expand that and them and us where we live.
