Philippians 4:1–9 (ESV)

Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord.

Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.

The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

The Gospel gives reason to rejoice.

The keynote of the Epistle and of Christian life is cheerfulness.

The repetition here, and the enforcement of the same in other Epistles shows us the importance of this duty.

If the Philippians neglected or undervalued this duty they have many imitators to-day.

Some professing Christians set their faces against it, and make the best of days the saddest, the best of books the most forbidding, and the best of services the least inviting.

We all go through seasons but we also are never alone.

The Gospel reminds us that God is near.

In the storms of life and in the good times of life, the Gospel points us to the knowledge that God is near.

-We do not have to be anxious about anything as our redemption is here.

-The Gospel draws us to be a people of prayer in all times as we walk with the Lord.

1 John 2:1 (ESV)

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.

But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

Advocate(parakletos) comforter, counselor, helper, companion.

This word is used 5 times in the NT, the other uses are in the upper room discourse in John 14-16 and each time they are referring to the work of the Holy Spirit.

God is not distant as some my think.

He is active in all three persons and as a whole to those who believe.

The Gospel directs our thoughts.

The majority of our thoughts should be on his goodness and not the brokenness of this world.

Don't fall into the trap of studying the Bible without doing what it says.”
