The Disciple’s Invitation
Hebrews 10: 19–25
Hebrews 10:19–25 NLT
19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. 21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. 24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
Introduction:
A- Saved the most interesting invitation this week. It is the disciples invitation. I would like to share it with you this morning.
B- This invitation is to you and I as disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
1 – it is written in a three part invitation to a deeper relationship with Christ parked by the words “let us…”

I- THE DISCIPLE’S INVITATION IS AN INVITATION TO INTIMATE FELLOWSHIP. (Hebrews 10: 19–22)

Hebrews 10:19–22 NLT
19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. 21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.

A- This intimate fellowship is made possible by the finished work of Christ. (Hebrews 10:19-20)

Hebrews 10:19–20 NLT
19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place.
1- Because of Christ’s finished work, we can have confidence in God. (Hebrews 10:19)
Hebrews 10:19 NLT
19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus.
“19 Ἔχοντες οὖν, ἀδελφοί, παρρησίαν εἰς τὴν εἴσοδον τῶν ἁγίων ἐν τῷ αἵματι Ἰησοῦ,
(Hebrews 4:16)
Hebrews 4:16 NLT
16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
a- No longer do we cringed before God, but boldly (παρρησίαν) come before him to receive needed help.
2- Because of his finished work, there is free access to the throne room of God. (Hebrews 10:20)
Hebrews 10:20 NLT
20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place.
a- Under the old Jewish sacrificial system, even the high priest could only enter behind the veil once per year.
b- When Jesus died, the veil was torn by God – creating complete access to himself by the believer.
(Matthew 27: 50–51)
Matthew 27:50–51 NLT
50 Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart,

B- This intimate fellowship is maintained by keeping our lives pure. (Hebrews 10:21–22)

Hebrews 10:21–22 NLT
21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
1- This is possible through our high priest and only mediator. (Hebrews 10:21)
Hebrews 10:21 NLT
21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house,
(I Timothy 2:5)
1 Timothy 2:5 NLT
5 For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.
2- Our lives are kept pure through confession.
(Hebrews 10:22)
Hebrews 10:22 NLT
22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
“22 προσερχώμεθα μετὰ ἀληθινῆς καρδίας ἐν πληροφορίᾳ πίστεως, ῥεραντισμένοι τὰς καρδίας ἀπὸ συνειδήσεως πονηρᾶς καὶ λελουσμένοι τὸ σῶμα ὕδατι καθαρῷ·”
a- We do fail, but have a way to rebound. (I John 1:8–10)
1 John 1:8–10 NLT
8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
1) “Hearts” - sin of wrongful motives
2) “Bodies” - outward acts of sin.

C- This intimate fellowship is possible for all believers.

1- Enoch had this type of relationship with God - walked with him. (Hebrews 11: 5–6)
Hebrews 11:5–6 NLT
5 It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying—“he disappeared, because God took him.” For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God. 6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
2- Mankind was created for intimate fellowship with God.

II- THE DISCIPLES INVITATION IS AN INVITATION TO STEADFAST COMMITMENT. (Hebrews 10:23)

Hebrews 10:23 NLT
23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
“23 κατέχωμεν τὴν ὁμολογίαν τῆς ἐλπίδος ἀκλινῆ, πιστὸς γὰρ ὁ ἐπαγγειλάμενος·”

A- Our steadfast commitment is to endure. (Hebrews 10:23a)

Hebrews 10:23a NLT
23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
1- The apostle Paul constantly urged believers to be steadfast in their commitment.
2- The early church had the testimony of having believers here how old to continue or commitment that was costly.
3- Jesus search the church at Thyatira to remain steadfast in their commitment. (Revelation 2:25)
Revelation 2:25 NLT
25 except that you hold tightly to what you have until I come.

B- Our steadfast commitment is grounded in the realization of Christ’s faithfulness. (Hebrews 10:23b)

Hebrews 10:23b NLT
23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
1- We are to be faithful because he is faithful period
(1 Thessalonians 5:24)
1 Thessalonians 5:24 NLT
24 God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.
· He is faithful to save us. (Hebrews 7: 24–25)
Hebrews 7:24–25 NLT
24 But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. 25 Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.
· He is faithful to keep us.
Illustration: “Trust Him”
“Trust him when dark doubt a say all thee,
Trust him when thy strength is small,
Trust him when to trust him
simply seems the hardest thing of all,
Trust him: he is ever faithful,
Trust him for his will is best,
Trust him, for the heart of Jesus
is the only place of rest.
Trust him, then, through clouds and sunshine;
all that cares upon him cast-
Til the storms of life are over
and the trusting days or past.”

III- THE DISCIPLES INVITATION IS AN INVITATION THROUGH CONSCIOUS ENCOURAGEMENT. (Hebrews 10:24–25)

Hebrews 10:24–25 NLT
24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

A- Encourage fellow believers to love and good works.

(Hebrews 10:24)
Hebrews 10:24 NLT
24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.
“24 καὶ κατανοῶμεν ἀλλήλους εἰς παροξυσμὸν ἀγάπης καὶ καλῶν ἔργων,”
1- Nothing inspires like example period
· This is why we look to the supreme example. (Hebrews 12:2)
Hebrews 12:2 NLT
2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
· Leaders of the church must lead inspire by example.
o Paul said, “Be imitators of me as I am of Christ.”
2- Love inspires love period this is proven by a life of good works. (Hebrews 10:24)
Hebrews 10:24 NLT
24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.
“25 μὴ ἐγκαταλείποντες τὴν ἐπισυναγωγὴν ἑαυτῶν, καθὼς ἔθος τισίν, ἀλλὰ παρακαλοῦντες, καὶ τοσούτῳ μᾶλλον ὅσῳ βλέπετε ἐγγίζουσαν τὴν ἡμέραν.”
(James 2:20)
James 2:20 NLT
20 How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?

B- Encourage fellow believers through faithfulness to the assembly. (Hebrews 10:25)

Hebrews 10:25 NLT
25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
1- Nothing is more discouraging than empty pews!

C- Encourage fellow believers because the time is short.

(Hebrews 10:25)
Hebrews 10:25 NLT
25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
1- All of the signs point to the nearness of Christ’s return.
(Matthew 24:1–51)
(Romans 13:11)
Romans 13:11 NLT
11 This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.
Illustration: “Cheer him, boys!”
There was a fire in the big city, and the Fireman from their letters together, and we’re not in their brain function to the top most story to rescue the people in peril. One after another was rescued by the brave firemen. All had been rescued, it seemed. No! Yonder is a person’s face at the upper window. Play wrapped up something around one of the firemen, and in spite of the fierce flames, he went again to that window, and put a robe around a little woman and started down. Then they saw him tremble as the fire raged around him and it seemed that he would fall with his precious burden, but the fire chief cried to his men: “Cheer him, boys! Cheer him, boys!” They cheered him, cheer after cheer, and heart came back, and he came down with the precious life saved! Many times are Christian brothers and sisters need to be cheered on, encouraged to keep on for the Lord, but all too often, instead of cheering them on – we shake the ladder!
Conclusion:
A- This invitation is for believers. It is for disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, you and I.
