But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

Pre-Sermon Ice Breaker

I recently heard about a man who said he read so many magazine articles about How junk food like candy, donuts, Ice cream, cake and pie were bad for you. After reading these articles he had made a new year’s resolution. He said, “I am not going…to read magazines anymore.”

Introduction

Throughout 2021 we have been engaged in the 2021 Scripture Memory Challenge. Last week during my message I spoke about Jesus role as a Prophet, a Priest and a King. I felt that God led me to take a look at these three roles more closely. Today I want to talk about being a Prophet. We said that like Jesus we share in these 3 ministries Prophet, Priest and King. In the Bible we see that there are two kinds of Prophetic speech. One which involves fore-telling. In fore-telling someone speaks about future events. We see this all throughout the Scripture.
Isaiah 7:14 KJV 1900
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, And shall call his name Immanuel.
This is an example of Prophecy.
The second kind of Prophetic Speech is Forth-telling. In Forth-telling someone says thus saith the Lord. It is a form of truth telling. Anytime we preach the gospel it is a forth-telling.
We are called to be truth-tellers. As such, do we perform such ministry. In our passage today, Paul explains what Prophetic Ministry looks like. Let’s examine it together.

Body

Edification

1 Corinthians 14:3 KJV 1900
But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
Edification - Greek = Oikodome (Oy-kod-om-ay’)
It means the Act of building up.
Ephesians 4:29 KJV 1900
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Romans 14:19 KJV 1900
Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
Ephesians 4:11–12 KJV 1900
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Exhortation

1 Corinthians 14:3 KJV 1900
But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
Exhortation - Greek = paraklesis (Par-ak’-lay-sis)
means to call along side.
1 Thessalonians 2:3–5 KJV 1900
For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:
John 14:26 KJV 1900
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Comfort

1 Corinthians 14:3 KJV 1900
But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
Comfort - Greek = Paramuthia (Par-am-oo-thee’-ah)
It means consolation or comfort.
1 Thessalonians 2:11 KJV 1900
As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,
2 Corinthians 1:4 KJV 1900
Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Conclusion

We said that like Jesus we share in these 3 ministries Prophet, Priest and King.
Today we looked at what Prophetic Ministry looks like.
