Matthew 7:7–11 NLT
7 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 “You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? 10 Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! 11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.
State: Jesus is again teaching us something about our Heavenly Father and what he is like
State: How we think our Father in heaven will treat us is filtered through what we think he is like
State: Many of us have grown up with parents who were less than loving, giving or affirming.
State: Why are they like that?
1) How their parents treated them
2) Life’s tragedies change a person
State: This can make trusting or believing in our heavenly Father challenging
State: Jesus taught us about our heavenly Father because we needed to change our opinion of him
What is this saying?
If we ask - we will receive
If we seek - we will find
If we knock - it shall be opened
State: Their tense denotes persistence
With these tenses in mind, we could translate 7:7–8 as,
“Keep on asking, and it will be given to you; keep on seeking, and you will find; keep on knocking, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who keeps on asking will continually receive, and he who keeps on seeking will continually find, and to him who keeps on knocking it will be opened.”
State: Jesus says something very important
Matthew 7:8 NLT
8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.
State: Everyone who asks WILL RECEIVE - BE ANSWERED
There are some conditions
Matthew 7:11 NLT
11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.
which agrees with
James 1:17 NLT
17 Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.
which agrees with
Psalm 84:11 NLT
11 For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.
State: God knows what is best for us
We do not know what is best for us
We think a certain job would be the right one ( God knows the future)
We think a certain person is the right one for us ( God knows the end of that too)
We want a certain lifestyle - ( live like the world around us)
Matthew 6:8 NLT
8 Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!
State: Most often, what we are called to seek God for is his:
His Kingdom
His Spirit and the fruit of His Spirit
His will & purpose in our life
Life’s necessities - food, shelter-clothing
State: What scripture is clear on is that God encourages us to ask!
John 14:13–14 NLT
13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!
John 15:16 NLT
16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.
John 15:7 NLT
7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!
John 16:24 NLT
24 You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.
God is like a mother and cares for us!
Isaiah 49:15 NLT
15 “Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you!
State: God is saying here that he has the heart of a mother.
Psalm 27:10 NLT
10 Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.
Promises......
John 16:24 NLT
24 You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.
