Song: Choose Someone

Prayer: Choose Someone

Scripture: Choose Someone

Give Scripture: Ezekiel 3:17-27

Ezekiel 3:17–27 KJV 1900
17 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. 18 When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. 19 Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. 20 Again, When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand. 21 Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul. 22 And the hand of the Lord was there upon me; and he said unto me, Arise, go forth into the plain, and I will there talk with thee. 23 Then I arose, and went forth into the plain: and, behold, the glory of the Lord stood there, as the glory which I saw by the river of Chebar: and I fell on my face. 24 Then the spirit entered into me, and set me upon my feet, and spake with me, and said unto me, Go, shut thyself within thine house. 25 But thou, O son of man, behold, they shall put bands upon thee, and shall bind thee with them, and thou shalt not go out among them: 26 And I will make thy tongue cleave to the roof of thy mouth, that thou shalt be dumb, and shalt not be to them a reprover: for they are a rebellious house. 27 But when I speak with thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; He that heareth, let him hear; and he that forbeareth, let him forbear: for they are a rebellious house.

Give A Review

We have been talking, at length, about Ezekiel’s introduction into the prophetic portion of his ministry/ or calling as he sat in captivity by the Babylonians.
Facts about Ezekiel Recap
Son of Priest
Priest in his own right
Most likely was 30 at the time when he was called into the prophetic ministry
He is in captivity by the River Chebar with some of his other Israelite brothers and sisters
Facts about the Timeline
Their are currently Israelites in the Kingdom of Judah who are subject to the Babylonians
Zedekiah is the current King and was installed by Nebuchadnezzar to be the King.
The Babylonians have raided the city of Jerusalem and have captured not just Ezekiel but all of the leaders outside those they wanted to stay behind and run the city.
At this point Jeremiah is in captivity under orders by King Zedekiah where he would remain until the Babylonians came along to take the city at which point he would be released.
That said, we are approaching the ending of Ezekiel’s prophetic ministry and we will enter into what many consider to be his first proper prophecy.
If nothing else is to be said, I want us to proceed into reading some ending verses from last week before we get started with this week’s lesson.
Ezekiel 3:17-21
Ezekiel 3:17–21 KJV 1900

Scripture Study

Ezekiel 3:22 KJV 1900
22 And the hand of the Lord was there upon me; and he said unto me, Arise, go forth into the plain, and I will there talk with thee.
So the Lord asks him to leave the banks of the river and proceed back into the plain where God will speak with him more.
Ezekiel 3:23 KJV 1900
23 Then I arose, and went forth into the plain: and, behold, the glory of the Lord stood there, as the glory which I saw by the river of Chebar: and I fell on my face.
God is about to provide him another glimpse at his glory and at that glimpse Ezekiel is once again paralyzed by the glory and falls to his face involuntarily.
God’s glory is so magnificent that is commands his will and authority
It brings everything under subjection
Hence why everything in his presence has to come into alignment
So he is forced into worship by the glory of God.
Ezekiel 3:24 KJV 1900
24 Then the spirit entered into me, and set me upon my feet, and spake with me, and said unto me, Go, shut thyself within thine house.
Once again we see the importance of listening to instruction
Then God tells him to go into his house but he does not simply say go home
But he tells him to shut himself up within the house
Go in by yourself and lock yourself in
This happens often in scripture when God ministers his glory to someone and they are forced to take time alone
Moses atop Mt. Sinai
Paul after the Damascus Road
Ezekiel 3:25–26 KJV 1900
25 But thou, O son of man, behold, they shall put bands upon thee, and shall bind thee with them, and thou shalt not go out among them: 26 And I will make thy tongue cleave to the roof of thy mouth, that thou shalt be dumb, and shalt not be to them a reprover: for they are a rebellious house.
Later addition to the text,
Theologians speculate Ezekiel went back and added it himself because it is written in accordance with his prose but does not exactly fit in accordance with the rest of the chapter.
Two Fold Interpretation
The bondage that God places on him to restrain him as we all should if we are to bear the fruits of the spirit
The bondage the people attempt to place on him is a prophetic example of exactly what Ezekiel is called to prophesy concerning.
Ezekiel 3:27 KJV 1900
27 But when I speak with thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; He that heareth, let him hear; and he that forbeareth, let him forbear: for they are a rebellious house.
Here God tells him to speak any way.

Provide Key Takeaways

Try to provide three key items we can take away from this text and where it applies today.
These would be items that tie the text back to the cross but also tie it into our daily lives in a real and profound way.
Try to pre-define these items but allow the discussion given to inform the takeaways
Item 1
Item 2
Item 3
