A Contemplation of Ethan the Ezrahite. There are several men named Ethan in the Hebrew Scriptures, but this man is mentioned specifically in 1 Kings 4:31 as someone who was famous for his wisdom – yet surpassed by Solomon’s greater wisdom. This means he was likely a contemporary of Solomon and was also alive during the reign of David.
1 Kings 4:31 (KJV 1900)
31 For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about.
Being wise in Solomons day would be a competition for the silver medal. David Phelps
Background
2 Samuel 7 - David you are the anointed King over my people
2 Samuel 7:13–17 (KJV 1900)
13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: 15 But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. 16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. 17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.
I will never reject you as I rejected Saul
Your enemies
Promises go back to Genesis 12
Sing - I will sing of the mercies of the Lord Psalm 89:1
Psalm 89:1 (KJV 1900)
1 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: With my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever I will sing I will sing What a mercy that I am in the church forever I will sing of the mercies of the Lord
With my mouth will I make known Thy faithfulness Thy faithfulness With my mouth will I make known Thy faithfulness to all generations
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever I will sing I will sing What a mercy that I am in the church forever I will sing of the mercies of the Lord

Have the promises of God failed?
David’s reign lasted 400 years but God promised forever
Would never dare try to measure actions that bring more or the most glory to God. But I have seen people stand here and sing of God’s faithfulness when their circumstances would lead others to questions and not sing
Lament psalms teach us what acceptable worship can sound like in our suffering.
When was it written?
time of Absalom
division of kingdom
end of the history of the David kingdom

The promises of God do not exempt us from suffering but enable us to suffer with hope.

God’s Promise

Then in verses 19–37, Ethan at length beautifully reminds God of the promise he made to David,
God had delivered this promise Psalm 89:19 Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, And saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.
God had chosen David from the people and anointed him king, established him, and promised that his enemies would not overcome him Psalm 89:20-24 I have found David my servant; With my holy oil have I anointed him: 21 With whom my hand shall be established: Mine arm also shall strengthen him. 22 The enemy shall not exact upon him; Nor the son of wickedness afflict him. 23 And I will beat down his foes before his face, And plague them that hate him. 24 But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: And in my name shall his horn be exalted.
God promised to be a Father to him and make him the firstborn. Psalm 89:25-27 I will set his hand also in the sea, And his right hand in the rivers. 26 He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, My God, and the rock of my salvation. 27 Also I will make him my firstborn, Higher than the kings of the earth.”
God promised to establish David’s offspring forever, and if they strayed from God’s ways, he would discipline them but would not remove his mercy. God would not lie to David Psalm 89:35 Once have I sworn by my holiness That I will not lie unto David.

How do we get from here to a lament?

Psalm 89:38 KJV 1900
38 But thou hast cast off and abhorred, Thou hast been wroth with thine anointed.

Did God fail us?

Had the promise of God really failed? In verses 38–45, that’s exactly what Ethan described — to God. And he did so in no uncertain terms.
Psalm 89:38–39 KJV 1900
38 But thou hast cast off and abhorred, Thou hast been wroth with thine anointed. 39 Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: Thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.

He told God how he had exalted David’s foes by causing them to defeat Israel in battle

Psalm 89:40–44 KJV 1900
40 Thou hast broken down all his hedges; Thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin. 41 All that pass by the way spoil him: He is a reproach to his neighbours. 42 Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; Thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice. 43 Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, And hast not made him to stand in the battle. 44 Thou hast made his glory to cease, And cast his throne down to the ground.
Psalm 89:45 KJV 1900
45 The days of his youth hast thou shortened: Thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.
(Psalm 89:40–44).He told God how he had “cut short the days of [David’s] youth [and] covered him with shame” (Psalm 89:45).

As you read these promises you begin to realize it is about someone greater than King David

Psalm is the anatomy of the Christian faith. Words for all emotions.
God is proud of Job. - No one on earth like him. Did not exempt Job from suffering.
Psalm 88 is the twin Psalm / saddest of the Psalms
Psalm 88:1-3 is private and personal but Psalm 89 is a public lament of the people of God
Psalm 88:1–3 KJV 1900
1 O Lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee: 2 Let my prayer come before thee: Incline thine ear unto my cry; 3 For my soul is full of troubles: And my life draweth nigh unto the grave.
Doesn’t sound that way for 37 verses

Despite suffering the Psalmist is about the business of praise

It is always time to praise God
Eyes are red, cheeks are swollen, and possibly exhausted he leads in praise
When Peter addresses the exiles in 1 Peter 1:3-5 he sings a doxology
1 Peter 1:3–5 (KJV 1900)
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
The Lord has given the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
No circumstance in life makes God you ounce less worthy of our praise.
We think when we are in trouble we get ease by complaining; but we do more, we get joy, by praising. Let our complaints be turned into thanksgiving. / We shouldn’t require turkey for this

Ethan wanted others to know what he knew.

Psalm 89:1 KJV 1900
1 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: With my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.
This is evangelism at it’s simplest and purest form
God’s mercy has been built up in our lives.
Psalm 89:2 KJV 1900
2 For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: Thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.
We have not one, but many mercies to rejoice in, and should therefore multiply the expressions of our thankfulness.” (Spurgeon)

God praised for His faithfulness and might. v.5-10

Psalm 89:5–10 KJV 1900
5 And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O Lord: Thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints. 6 For who in the heaven can be compared unto the Lord? Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the Lord? 7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, And to be had in reverence of all them that are about him. 8 O Lord God of hosts, Who is a strong Lord like unto thee? Or to thy faithfulness round about thee? 9 Thou rulest the raging of the sea: When the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them. 10 Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; Thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.
Heavens declare his wonders
Faithful to all the saints
No one in can be compared to Him
God is greatly to be feared among us believers
No one is as strong as Him
No one is as faithful
God overcame the proud one / Egypt for them
Psalm 89:10 KJV 1900
10 Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; Thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.

The glory and strength of God in heaven and on earth. v.11-15

Psalm 89:11–14 KJV 1900
11 The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: As for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them. 12 The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name. 13 Thou hast a mighty arm: Strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand. 14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: Mercy and truth shall go before thy face.
The heaven and the earth and all that is on the earth belong to God. He founded them,
Turn to all points of the compass, and behold the Lord is there.
God has a mighty army
Mercy and truth go before Him. He never does wrong.

(15-18) The blessedness of those who know the incomparable God. .v.15-18

Psalm 89:15–18 KJV 1900
15 Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: They shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance. 16 In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: And in thy righteousness shall they be exalted. 17 For thou art the glory of their strength: And in thy favour our horn shall be exalted. 18 For the Lord is our defence; And the Holy One of Israel is our king.
Those who know the joyful sound of this truth
They enjoy the favor and fellowship of God’s face:
They rejoice all day long in the name – the character and nature – of the incomparable God.
They find their strength in God, especially in His favor: You are the glory of their strength.
They enjoy God’s protection: Our Lord is our defence.

The Christian life is lived in submission to God through trust.

Psalmist does not have an answer to this his questions but does not cease to meet for worship.
Psalm 89:46 (KJV 1900)
46 How long, Lord? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? Shall thy wrath burn like fire?
Psalm 89:49 (KJV 1900)
49 Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, Which thou swarest unto David in thy truth?
Even when we do not know what God is doing we can still acknowledge that He is good and that He is still in control
He may not come when you want Him but He always come right on time.

What if you believed the failing of the promises becomes the way in which God fulfills His Word

They believe they have lost hope of having a Davidic King
Psalm 89:38–45 (KJV 1900)
38 But thou hast cast off and abhorred, Thou hast been wroth with thine anointed. 39 Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: Thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground. 45 The days of his youth hast thou shortened: Thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.

Has God Been Faithful to His Promise?

But you might ask, just like the psalmist did, "Has God been faithful to his promise? Does the throne of David endure for ever?" And the angel comes to the virgin Mary and gives the answer

Was this true about David?

Psalm 16:8–10 (KJV 1900)
8 I have set the Lord always before me: Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: My flesh also shall rest in hope. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; Neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

It is true about Jesus

Luke 1:31–33 (KJV 1900)
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Quote by David in Psalm 16 was not about himself.

Acts 2:23–25 (KJV 1900)
23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: 24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. 25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
Acts 2:30–31 (KJV 1900)
30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
Jesus explains this to the disciples who thought God’s plans have failed in Luke 24. When Jesus shows up twice and points them to the Bible.

Where does Peter get this idea?

Jesus teaches this on the road to Emmaus. He teaches that people do not know their Bible.
Luke 24:25–26 (KJV 1900)
25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

The things the children of Israel had experienced would be experienced by Jesus. Jesus experienced Psalm 89:39-45

Psalm 89:39–45 (KJV 1900)
39 Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: Thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground. 45 The days of his youth hast thou shortened: Thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.
When you believe the promises of God has failed you will learn that God was very much alive and working.

When you believe He has failed you will be surprised that He is doing a work to fulfill.

Luke 24:44–47 (KJV 1900)
44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
The suffer of the messiah is foreshadow on the suffering of David’s line.
Christ should suffer on the 3rd day and be risen.
Foreshadowed by the Davidic king

Paul gets this Acts 17:2-3

Acts 17:2–3 (KJV 1900)
2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, 3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

Looks like God’s plan fails at the crucification but it is God’s plan

Confusion when you believe God’s plan in this world are primarily but us and our comfort when they are about Him and His glory
They are told the Messiah was crucified and they crucified Him
Acts 2:36 (KJV 1900)
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Then they cry out
Acts 2:37 (KJV 1900)
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

What shall we do? Understand that He died for your sin of not understanding and crucifying Him.

Acts 2:38 (KJV 1900)
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Conclusion

Psalm 89:48 (KJV 1900)
48 What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? Shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.
Reminder that what we are asking for can only be answered in Jesus.

David gets it. Peter gets it. Paul gets it. But do you get it?

Life will never make sense if you are convinced you are the main character in the story!! it is always, always, always about Jesus!

Psalm 89:52 KJV 1900
52 Blessed be the Lord for evermore. Amen, and Amen.
Psalmist ends asking for a strong amen.
