Promises of God – His Holy Spirit
Thus far we have looked at the promise of God’s Love, His Forgiveness, and His Salvation. Tonight, we look at His promise to pour out His Spirit upon each of us.
For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”
1 Corinthians 1:20.
1. Joel 2:28-29 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. This prophecy / promise has not yet been fulfilled. Most likely in the New Kingdom.
Jesus tells us:
2. Jesus made this promise to the apostles.
a. Turn to John 14 You must read 14:10-18! - John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; (He didn’t say YOU will pray – HE said I will pray. That’s a prayer that cannot be denied.)
3. And, behold, I send the promiseof my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Luke 24:49.
a. We see this come about in the book of Acts (READ)
i. Acts 1:1-8 / Acts 2:1-4
4. Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
a. Now here’s a place you can compare yourself to God. Do you enjoy giving gifts to your children and or grandchildren? Of course, you do, We want them to have the best of the best and everything that we never had. Do you think that you can out give God?
b. You ASK by faith, for forgiveness; repenting unto salvation – thereby Receiving – grace, salvation, the Spirit.
Peter tells us:
5. Acts 2:38-39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
a. Peter bears testimony of this biblical truth/promise; “ye shall”
b. The promise is to US as well.
c. Acts 11:16 for clarity – “Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.” It’s not about the water!
Paul tells us:
6. Paul speaks of the baptism this way,
a. 1 Corinthians 12:13 …by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body
i. We have “ALL” be baptized by the Spirit.
b. Romans 6:1-4.
7. Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealedwith that holy Spirit of promise,
a. Scripture proves scripture. Ephesians 1:13 validate the Holy Spirit as a promise, even one by which we are sealed.
8. 1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? Who lives in the Temple but God? If you have another spirit in your temple it’s because you have someone or something other than God on your throne. In which case you need to check your salvation. (“Work out your own salvation” Phil. 2:12). There will not be a co-habitation.
9. Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
There is so much more that can be said of the Holy Spirit.
· Baptism of the Holy Spirit versus being Filled with the Holy Spirit, that is receiving versus filling.
o The phase “receive the Holy Spirit” is found 9 or 10 times in the NT.
· Gifts that come with receiving the Holy Spirit – speaking in tongues, healing, and so on.
Many believe that with the gift of the Holy Spirit comes the gift of speaking in tongues. I cannot receive that because I know too many Holy Ghost filled people that don’t speak in tongues.
Many believe in the cessation of the gifts, meaning they are not given any more and that includes speaking in tongues. Well, I cannot believe that either because I know too many Holy Ghost filled people that speak in tongues.
Personally, I don’t think I believe there is a difference. Anyone baptized by the Spirit is filled with the Spirit. How is it that we receive the Holy Spirit? By faith. Peter told us, believe and ye shall receive.
However, there are difference ways in which the how the Holy Spirit responds within us, or how He gifts each of us. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: 3 And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship… Exodus 31:1-3. So, we can see God works differently in each of us.
If you have the indwelling of the Spirit, it has to be with all of the Spirit. Thus, we have the power to walk in newness of life – Romans 6:4, Colossians 2:12.
You receive salvation through faith – Receive also the Holy Spirit by that same faith.
This is a topic you may have to study and work out in your own heart and mind. Regardless! The Holy Spirit of God is promised by God and by Jesus to all that believe upon the name of the only begotten Son of God. “That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” Galatians 3:14.
