Introduction

New Testament: Redemption for all who turn to Jesus.
Galatians 4:4–7 ESV
4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
Jesus came at the God appointed time to redeem all who place their trust in in him for salvation.
Because we have been redeemed, we are no longer slaves to sin.
We are now free in Christ
The Hero of faith Moses is a prime example of the story of redemption
: Exodus 1-15

We all need a Redeemer.

A redeemer sets us free from harm.

a. Moses was redeemed as an infant.

Pharaoh decreed that every newborn Hebrew son be thrown into the Nile.
Yet, Moses is saved through the power of God and his mother’s desperate actions...
Exodus 2:2–10 ESV
2 The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. 3 When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank. 4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. 5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. 6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”
After Moses grows up, he witnesses an Egyptian beating a Hebrew and kills him.
Exodus 2:11–12 ESV
11 One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people. 12 He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
But the Hebrew saw Moses’ murder of the Egyptian and fearing Pharaoh, moses flees to Midian.
Exodus 2:15 ESV
15 When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well.
Ultimately, Moses makes Midian his home marrying the priest Jethro’s daughter Zipporah.
It is while serving as a shepherd that Moses experience second redemption.

b. Moses was redeemed from his act of murder.

God appears to Moses in the burning bush
Exodus 3:1–2 ESV
1 Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.
God and him talk like you and I would talk right now…
yet here’s the deal,
God commissions Moses to confront Pharaoh
Exodus 4:14–17 ESV
14 Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses and he said, “Is there not Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well. Behold, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. 15 You shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth, and I will be with your mouth and with his mouth and will teach you both what to do. 16 He shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth, and you shall be as God to him. 17 And take in your hand this staff, with which you shall do the signs.”
God calls Moses to return to Egypt
Exodus 4:18–20 ESV
18 Moses went back to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Please let me go back to my brothers in Egypt to see whether they are still alive.” And Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace.” 19 And the Lord said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for all the men who were seeking your life are dead.” 20 So Moses took his wife and his sons and had them ride on a donkey, and went back to the land of Egypt. And Moses took the staff of God in his hand.

The Redeemed Follow the Lord

a. Moses obeys the Lord to go to Egypt.

Moses meets with Aaron and the elders and Aaron communicates all Moses told him. (4:27-30)
Moses and Aaron then go to Pharaoh
Pharaoh gets mad and makes increases the labor of the Hebrews
Sometimes things get harder before they are better.
God reaffirms His Plan which leads to the Ten Plagues.

b. God uses Moses to perform miracles in Egypt.

The Lexham Bible Dictionary Ten Plagues and the Exodus

1. Water turns to blood

2. Frogs

3. Gnats

4. Flies

5. Death of livestock

6. Boils

7. Fiery hail

8. Locusts

9. Darkness

10. Death of all firstborn people and animals

The plague of death is a foreshadowing of the coming Christ, Jesus. Who would die for the sins of all who believe and trust in Him alone for salvation.
They took lambs and killed them.
They dipped a bunch of hyssop into the blood of the Lamb and spread it over the lintel and the doorposts. (Exodus 12:22)
Jesus would be nailed to a wood cross where his blood would be shed so that we who trust in him alone can experience freedom from our slavery of sin and would be made alive in Christ!
Moses leads the Hebrews out of Egypt and Pharaoh and his army come to attack them.
God instructs Moses to divide the sea before them and after they cross the sea God crushes the enemies of the Hebrews with the waters of the Red Sea. (Exodus 14:15-22)
Exodus 14:15–22 ESV
15 The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. 16 Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground. 17 And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and his horsemen. 18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.” 19 Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, 20 coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night. 21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
