Story of my friend that did what I did.
How well do we know Jesus?
The Pharisees knew all to know about the messiah, yet with one question, Jesus dashes all they thought that they knew.
Jesus was trying to get them to deeper understand the identity of the messiah.
Luke 20:41-44

Son of David

This was one of the names of the messiah, and it was a name which people had used for Jesus.
People Recognize Jesus as the Son of David
Luke 18:35-39
Luke 18:35–39 ESV
35 As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 And he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
The blind man was spiritually in tune enough to see that
1. Jesus was the Son of David.
2. The Son of David could help him.
The Messiah
This is becasue it is shown that the messiah will come from the lineage of David.
Isaiah 11:1
Isaiah 11:1 ESV
1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
The stump of Jesse. This is to say after it seems that the lineage of David is cut off.
After the people have been taken into exile and the people scattered.
From that we will see the messiah come.
Jeremiah 23:5
Jeremiah 23:5 ESV
5 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
In the middle of speaking of the horrible shepherds of the people. God stops and speaks of a righteous branch. One from the stump of Jessie.
He will the the one to execute justice and righteousness.
The Pharisees were looking for the Messiah, they knew he would be the Son of David.
What they didn’t expect, was for him to be the Son of God.

Son of God

v.42, The Lord said to my Lord
This was confusing because in this culture, the father is always greater than the Son.
Therefore David would be greater than his ancestor.
They were perplexed becasue they couldn’t think comprehend how all of this tied together.
How was it that David claimed his descendant would be His Lord?
Jesus is pointing to this, showing that the messiah was not just a mere man. But was God incarnate. God in the flesh.
This is how he could be a descendant, and yet the Lord.
Romans 1:1-4
Romans 1:1–4 ESV
1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
Jesus was the son of David according to the flesh.
The resurrection points to the fact that Jesus was not only the Son of David, but the Son of God.
He had to be the son of David because:
It had to be descendant of Adam and Eve to break the curse of sin.
He had to be human in order to die, God can’t die.
He had to be the Son of God:
In order to live a perfect life.
To endure the wrath of God.
v.43

All Things Subject to Him

Hebrews 10:12-13
Hebrews 10:12–13 ESV
12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.
Shows the fulfillment in Luke.
After Christ had made the sacrifice for all sins. He sat at the right hand of God, waiting for the time when all things would be subjected to him.
1 Corinthians 15:24-26
1 Corinthians 15:24–26 ESV
24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
At the return of Christ, all things will be placed under the direct rule of Jesus.
Death being an enemy that will be destroyed with everything else.
All of these things taking place is why Jesus is the rightful heir of the Davidic covenant.
Fulfillment of Davidic Covenant
Genesis 49:10
Genesis 49:10 ESV
10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
This in the end is the fulfillment of the Davidic prophecy.
One who is a descendant of David will rule. That rule will continue for all eternity.
Jesus is that descendant and the one who will rule forever.

Gospel

Jesus is the Son of David
Jesus fulfills the Davidic covenant where He will reign forever.
Only a human could die to take the punishment for us.
Jesus is the Son of God
He has the power and authority to bring all things into subjection to himself.
Only the Son of God could endure the wrath of God for our sakes.

Application

Do you know Him?
We will be subjected to Him.
Every knee will bow.
