Introduction:

1. The Mission (Jonah 1:1-2)

God called Jonah to go to Nineveh and preach a message of judgment
Jonah knew the nature of God
If the message of judgement produced repentance, God would show mercy
Application:
Our mission is clear:
Acts 1:8 ESV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Notice the regions Jesus sent the disciples into:
Jerusalem - where they were
Judea - the surrounding area
Samaria - where they didn’t want to go, the enemy, those not like them
Ends of the Earth
Just like Jonah, we have been sent. Most Christians are not going anywhere. They are not going to Jerusalem, they aren’t going to their Judea, they aren’t going to the ends of the earth, and certainly aren’t going to those they don’t like. We don’t even want to stay friends with people who disagree with us anymore!
We have to change this! We have to have a change of attitude and recognize the mission. We are called to Go! Where are you going?

2. The Journey (Jonah 1:3-17)

Why did Jonah not want to go?
He’s a prophet right? He should want to preach God’s message.
To answer this we need to first look at who the people of Nineveh were.
Ninevites:
Capital city of Assyria
Cruel and brutal people
Would later be used by God to judge Israel
Jonah was called to preach a message of judgement on these people, so why not still go?
He knew the character of God and the possibility of repentance
He didn’t want certain people to be saved
Application:
Is there any group of people that you would not want to go reach with the gospel
Think closely. Do you go? If not, is it possible that the reason you don’t go is because you don’t like the people you are called to go to?
Is is possible that you only care about your own salvation, but not that of others who have never heard?
What can we do about this?
Let’s look at what Jonah did.
Fled to go as far away from God as possible
Got on a boat to go to Tarshish
Tarshish is in Spain and is as far away from Nineveh as he could go
Pagan men were more concerned about Jonah’s life, yet he cared nothing about the Ninevites

3. The Repentance (Jonah 2)

Jonah is swimming with the fishes in Davey Jone’s Locker
God appoints a great fish
We don’t know if it is a whale or not but it doesn’t matter
God preserves Jonah in the fish
Jonah considers God’s mercy to him and decides others should receive it as well
