Ecclesiastes 9:11–18 NASB95
11 I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning nor favor to men of ability; for time and chance overtake them all. 12 Moreover, man does not know his time: like fish caught in a treacherous net and birds trapped in a snare, so the sons of men are ensnared at an evil time when it suddenly falls on them. 13 Also this I came to see as wisdom under the sun, and it impressed me. 14 There was a small city with few men in it and a great king came to it, surrounded it and constructed large siegeworks against it. 15 But there was found in it a poor wise man and he delivered the city by his wisdom. Yet no one remembered that poor man. 16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the wisdom of the poor man is despised and his words are not heeded. 17 The words of the wise heard in quietness are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools. 18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.
we can see two different topics here
the first one is the first two verses where Solomon has the usual topic that we all will die.
however in the next 5 verses we get an interesting study on wisdom
lets dive in
Ecclesiastes 9:11 NASB95
11 I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning nor favor to men of ability; for time and chance overtake them all.
lets look at a different translation to understand this verse a little better
Ecclesiastes 9:11 CJB
11 Yet another thing I observed under the sun is that races aren’t won by the swift or battles by the strong, and that food doesn’t go to the wise or wealth to the intelligent or favor to the experts; rather, time and chance rule them all.
this is easier to understand, but what is Solomon saying?
races aren’t won buy the swift or fastest?
nor battles by the strongest warriors?.....
but the fastest do win races and the best warriors do win battles.
so then what is he saying?
Ecclesiastes 9:11 (NASB95)
11 .... for time and chance overtake them all.
time and chance. we can add another thing here God
for time, chance and God overtake them all!
1 Samuel 17:38–51 NASB95
38 Then Saul clothed David with his garments and put a bronze helmet on his head, and he clothed him with armor. 39 David girded his sword over his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. So David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.” And David took them off. 40 He took his stick in his hand and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, even in his pouch, and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine. 41 Then the Philistine came on and approached David, with the shield-bearer in front of him. 42 When the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, with a handsome appearance. 43 The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 The Philistine also said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field.” 45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted. 46 “This day the Lord will deliver you up into my hands, and I will strike you down and remove your head from you. And I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands.” 48 Then it happened when the Philistine rose and came and drew near to meet David, that David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand into his bag and took from it a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the stone sank into his forehead, so that he fell on his face to the ground. 50 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and he struck the Philistine and killed him; but there was no sword in David’s hand. 51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
who was the stronger man? Goliath was 9’9” one piece of his armor weighed 120 lbs and David was a boy of 15-19 and he won
when we are in Gods will He will fight for us!! who needs chance or luck when God is on our side??
the world however should worry about chance because they never know when and what will happen
Ecclesiastes 9:12 NASB95
12 Moreover, man does not know his time: like fish caught in a treacherous net and birds trapped in a snare, so the sons of men are ensnared at an evil time when it suddenly falls on them.
the world doesn’t know when bad things will happen and worry about it we also don’t know when bad things will happen, but we have something that the world doesn’t! we have a God who loves us and takes care of us.
Romans 8:28 NASB95
28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
this is a great verse, but have you heard it in context? it is soo much better!!
Romans 8:26–35 NASB95
26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
God has us!! simply stay close to Him and He protects you! am I saying that if you leave Him He wont protect you? no I’m saying that if you leave Him He will discipline you! which sometimes looks the same from our view, but like a baby chick under its mothers wing we are safe and secure when we stay in God’s will!
this all takes wisdom on our part. and what is wisdom?
Proverbs 9:10 NASB95
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
fear, respect, awe, reverence, obedience, these are all in the fear of the Lord! and they all lead to wisdom.
Ecclesiastes 9:13–16 NASB95
13 Also this I came to see as wisdom under the sun, and it impressed me. 14 There was a small city with few men in it and a great king came to it, surrounded it and constructed large siegeworks against it. 15 But there was found in it a poor wise man and he delivered the city by his wisdom. Yet no one remembered that poor man. 16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the wisdom of the poor man is despised and his words are not heeded.
this again is earthly wisdom.
Solomon seems to be saying “what good is wisdom when the wise are forgotten”
I want to ask Solomon a different question. “to who?”
what good is wisdom to who? to me now? a lot! to the city that is can save? a lot!! to God’s plan? that’s for Him to decide. to my pride or Solomon’s pride? none!
so in this case I dont see a bad side. who cares if the world remembers us?? the most i will probably get is my sons kids to remember me and after that nothing!! but my God knows me! and He remembers me and I will get to hang out with Him forever!! compared to that who cares if the world even knows that we exist? as long as we are known by God!!
Ecclesiastes 9:17–18 NASB95
17 The words of the wise heard in quietness are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools. 18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.
these verses are screaming at me to preach a political message, but that is not what I was called to do! I dont care if you are for or against Trump or Biden this verse could easily be used to support you, but I will do neither because here is the truth
God put them both in the white house!!!! like it or not He did
so if I wont be using this verse for that what will I?
Joshua 7:1–5 NASB95
1 But the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully in regard to the things under the ban, for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took some of the things under the ban, therefore the anger of the Lord burned against the sons of Israel. 2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” So the men went up and spied out Ai. 3 They returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not let all the people go up; only about two or three thousand men need go up to Ai; do not make all the people toil up there, for they are few.” 4 So about three thousand men from the people went up there, but they fled from the men of Ai. 5 The men of Ai struck down about thirty-six of their men, and pursued them from the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them down on the descent, so the hearts of the people melted and became as water.
one man sinned and as a result 36 people died.
we often dont have a correct view of sin! we dont think that it is that big of a deal
“it only effects me, so why is it such a big deal?”
simple answer? God said so!! that should be enough
we see over and over time and again what sin does and yet we dont care
Romans 8:22–23 NASB95
22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.
all of creation is tainted by our sin and is eagerly waiting for its redemption and if that is not enough our sin Killed Jesus!!!
it was my sin and your sin that put Jesus on the cross
we need to wake up, repent from our sin and seek His will!! only good can come of this!
Ecclesiastes 12:13 NASB95
13 The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.
if we fear God and keep His commands we will sin less and we will live in the shadow of His wings safe and secure
it is the best place to be!
lets pray
