As he continue our study in the gospel of John we now have another opportunity to see Jesus speak and bring light to another person.

In the previous chapters we get to see and example of light and darkness, day and night.

Chapter 1, We read that Jesus is the light

Chapter 3, we read that Nicodemus comes to see Jesus when it is night.

We also read that Jesus is the light, but the world (who God loves) loves the darkness. and doesn't want to be in the light in fear that their sins will be exposed.

Lets see what happens during the day........

Lets Read John 4:5-26

John 4:5–26 (NASB95)

5 So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar (Si-Car), near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph;

6 and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”

8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

9 Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

11 She said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water?

12 “You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?”

13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;

14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.”

16 He said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.”

17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’;

18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.”

19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.

20 “Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.”

21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

22 “You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

23 “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.

24 “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.”

26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”

This conversation is valuable, strong and means more then what we are just reading.

History lesson

History of the Jews and Samaritans

It is believed that when the nation of Israel went to the promised land, the nation divided into 2 parts.

North = Israel

and

the South = Judah

The north was sinful and God allowed the Assyrian Army came and took over the land.

now some Jews remained.

The Assyrian king brought foreigners to come into the land and the mixing of those foreigners and the Jews that remain came Samaritans (consider half-breeds) Thus the tension

The tension came because the Jews did see them are clean.

The Samaritans didn't worship to true God of Israel.

Josephus’ account

Josephus (who was an ancient historian) says that a 9 AD (after Jesus was born) a few Samaritans entered into the temple of the Jews and placed human bones all over the temple, which made the temple unclean

He also says that if there was a “bad Jew” that Jew could go to the Samaritans and the Samaritan would welcome him.

So this brief history, we see why the Jews and the Samaritans did not get along. At all.

The Story in Samaria

Jesus is heading back to Galilee, and on the way be go through the city of Samaria

Now, this is about a 65-67 mile walk from Aenon to Galilee.

but a 29 mile walk from Aenon to Samaria (Jacob's well)

This is an amazing conversation

John 4:5–8 (NASB95)

Jesus was tired.

So upon Jesus arriving to Si-Car, Jesus was weary /tired from the journey

Jesus is tired from the trip, exhausted

We see here that Jesus is fully man and fully God.

He sees a woman who is a Samarian. drawing water

Now another history lesson

Back then when woman would draw water, they would do it in the early morning, or in the evening, and they rarely when alone.

also because of the weight of the water, (being heavy) they would help each other with drawing the water.

But this woman is alone at the 6 hour (noon) to draw water.

so she is neither a bad woman , or an outcast. or both

7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

Jesus ask her from water.

Jesus is tired and thirsty.

his disciples went out to get food. Jesus was waiting for this woman, and ask her for some water.

We know why the Jews don't speak to the Samarians.

Jesus breaks a tradition, and rule that has lasted for hundreds of years to ask this woman to help Him

But what is her response?

In verse 9, The woman does not reject Jesus’ request. But instead she reminds him of class, position of authority, and superiority.

She remains him about how things are.

In the Greek, it reads like this: “Why are you, and Jewish man talking to me, a woman, a Samaritan woman?”

Because again Jew do not associate or even use the same cups and bowls as Samarians.

John 4:10 NASB95

10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

Jesus here states to the woman that she does not even know who He is.

She is unaware of the Gift of God. and she is not aware that the one who can give it to her is standing before her.

in another way Jesus is saying, if you knew the gift of God (Salvation) and you knew who says to you for a drink (material) who is the source of Salvation. You would ask Him, and he will give you living water (salvation)

but her response

John 4:11–12 NASB95

11 She said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? 12 “You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?”

this woman clearly doesn't understand what He is saying.

She remains speaking about the literal.

But her answer was interesting

She says that He does not have the means to get water

she identifies that her father is Jacob, that she to comes from the bloodline of Jacob

She says that this well (in which she draws water is great because it has provided for Jacob himself and all his family and flock

The well provided mortal life, in its water. She is asking of Jesus is comparing Himself to the life of Jacob’s well’s water

Different Water

John 4:13–14 NASB95

13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

Just does not get frustrated, instead he explains His answer with facts.

Jesus is talking about Salvation.

the woman is talking and materials and bloodline.

In the Greek, Jesus says that those who drink His water (salvation) will never ever trust again.....in all eternal

But they will be a well springing up water.

The water (salvation) that Jesus will give us is not a stagnate pool like Jacob’s well, but will be spring of water.

John 4:15 NASB95

15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.”

It’s clear that this woman still does not understand what He is talking about.

but it is also clear that she has some respect from him, because she calls him “Sir”

But she is still thinking of material things.

Jesus changes approach.

John 4:16–18 NASB95

16 He said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.”

She answers, “I don’t have a husband” this could be the attempt to end the conversation

Jesus reveals to her something that only she would have known

I have no husband.....

Because of the circumstances of the woman going to the well alone and in the time of day, some believe that this woman could be saying that “she is available

You’ve had 5 husbands...

This woman was married 5 different times, and the man that she is living with me was not her husband

The Jewish and Samaritan rules on marriage were not different. The fact that she was married 5 times, this is not acceptable.

She is living with a man that is not

so was she widowed? who knows, ,it could have been 5 divorces

But we know that she was not not married. and a outcast because of it.

society could have looked at this woman as if something was wrong with her.

Her response

John 4:19 NASB95

19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.

The woman has been talking to Jesus all this time. But now her eyes are opened.

She perceive / see / She observed that Jesus was a Prophet.

This whole time Jesus is talking to this woman about heavenly things, she remained on earthly things

Heavenly things vs Earthly things.............................

If God is love then why???????

God, why are you doing this to me???????

I don’t understand.......

I have sinned, but it is not as bad as.........

God, where are you

The unbeliever questions Him out of Heaven

Would you be willing to seek Him into Heaven
