Introduction

In the New Covenant the “good man” is non-existent.
However, we do good things, things that God Himself can praise.
Romans 2:29 NAS
But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.
1 Corinthians 4:5 NAS
Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God.
Romans 3:10–19 NASB95
10 as it is written, There is none righteous, not even one; 11 There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God; 12 All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one.” 13 Their throat is an open grave, With their tongues they keep deceiving,” The poison of asps is under their lips”; 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”; 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood, 16 Destruction and misery are in their paths, 17 And the path of peace they have not known.” 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.” 19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God;
1 Peter 2:11–12 NAS
Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.
2 Corinthians 8:21 NAS
for we have regard for what is honorable, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.
Romans 12:17 NAS
Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men.
Romans 14:16–19 (NAS): Therefore do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil;
17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
18 For he who in this way serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men.
19 So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another.
Luke 2:52 NAS
And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Cf.
1 Samuel 2:26 NAS
Now the boy Samuel was growing in stature and in favor both with the Lord and with men.
Proverbs 12:2
Proverbs 12:2 NAS
A good man will obtain favor from the Lord, But He will condemn a man who devises evil.
Proverbs 12:2 BHW 4.18
ט֗וֹב יָפִ֣יק רָ֭צוֹן מֵיְהוָ֑ה וְאִ֖ישׁ מְזִמּ֣וֹת יַרְשִֽׁיעַ׃
A good man is one of social goodness.
Proverbs 8:32–36 NAS
“Now therefore, O sons, listen to me, For blessed are they who keep my ways. “Heed instruction and be wise, And do not neglect it. “Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at my doorposts. “For he who finds me finds life And obtains favor from the Lord. “But he who sins against me injures himself; All those who hate me love death.”
Proverbs 24:8 NAS
One who plans to do evil, Men will call a schemer.
Proverbs 11:28–12:4 (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs (NAC)): The structure of this collection is complex. Proverbs 11:28 has a close parallel in 12:3; both concern the flourishing of the righteous and the failure of the wicked to establish themselves through wealth and cunning. Proverbs 11:29, which concerns a son’s behavior in the family (see 17:2), is answered by 12:4, which deals with the wife’s contribution to the family. Proverbs 11:28–29 and 12:3–4 thus form an inclusio around 11:30–12:2.
