SCRIPTURE READING
Genesis 2:18-25
PASTORAL CHALLENGE TO SHANE AND KITTY
Introduction
I’ve known Kitty a long time, and have enjoyed getting to know Shane.
Almost family (after Salem)
Jokes:
I married Miss Right. Just didn’t know her first name was “Always.”
I haven’t spoken to my wife in 18 months. I don’t like to interrupt her.
Kitty and Shane expressed the desire to emphasize two ideas this weekend: new beginnings and family unity. There is a planned butterfly release a little later, and butterflies are a good picture of new beginnings.
A marriage is a new beginning.
It’s not a beginning like a birth, but more like a transformation.
Two people, without losing their individuality, become something else entirely when brought together.
It’s more like a metamorphosis. Consider the butterfly. Beginning as a caterpillar, it becomes something new through the process of metamorphosis.
Kitty and Shane, your marriage is a new beginning for both of you. Without losing any of your individuality, you become something new when joined together.
Marriage is a new beginning that transforms.
Marriage transforms two people into one.
One flesh - “the two shall become one flesh.”
One will - not they you will always agree, because that individuality is still there. But you will give and take, and “submit to one another in the Lord,” and Shane will learn to lead in a way that honors Jesus and respects Kitty’s individual will.
Marriage transforms two families into one. (FAMILY UNITY)
Before government, before the church…before EVEN Clemson football, God created the family. In the Garden of One, God made the woman out of the side of the man, and the two were one.
Your two families are now one. How your two families get along will have a lot to do with your actions and reactions.
This kind of transformation requires you to change. I want to encourage you with a few ideas on how to change well.
Be open to change.
JOKE: “Women marry because they believe the he will change on day. Men marry because they believe she’ll never change. Both are wrong.”
“You don’t marry one person; you marry three: the person you think they are, the person they [actually] are, and the person they are going to become…” (Richard Needham).
You are two imperfect people bringing all those imperfections together.Friction is certain; conflict is inevitable. Be open to change; your own and your new spouse’s.
Be patient with one another.
“Be humble and gentle in every way. Be patient with each other and lovingly accept each other” (Eph 4:2).
Forgive one another. Two sinners brought together will sin against one another.
Be in the moment. JOKE: First night in the bridal suite, and the husband is staring intently out the window into a beautiful, starry sky. Wife: “Aren’t you coming to bed?” Husband: “Not on your life! My father said this would be the best night of my life and I’m not going to miss it for anything!”
We all need to be transformed.
Caterpillar is “buried” in the chrysalis only to reemerge “reborn.”
Jesus said, “You must be born again.”
We are “buried with Christ” so that we might rise again to newness of life.
Kitty and Shane would be overjoyed if you were born again to a new beginning today.
DECLARATION OF INTENT
-Kitty and Shane face one another and hold hands.
Kitty, do you take Shane to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, to love, honor, and cherish, in sickness and health, forsaking all others, for as long as you both shall live?( I do ),
VOWS
Shane, do you take Kitty to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, to love, honor, and cherish, in sickness and health, forsaking all others, for as long as you both shall live?( I do )

PRAYER
David
UNITY CEREMONY
-(David will instruct everyone to stand and form an aisle.  Shane and Kitty will turn and walk to the beginning of the newly formed aisle.  David will join alongside.)
We are ALL going to participate in the ceremony.  Please stand and form an aisle.
-(At this time ________ and ________ will hand out envelopes to everyone with butterflies.)
Everyone will receive an envelope that contains one of the most beautiful miracles of God’s creation.  In just a few moments, when instructed, we will all open our envelopes, and all participate in this celebration of life and new beginnings.
PRONOUNCEMENT
-Kitty, Shane, and David all standing together facing the two lines of guests forming the “aisle” David pronounces…
Those whom God has joined together, let no man put asunder. In so much as Shane and Kitty have consented together in holy wedlock and have witnessed the same before God and this company, having given and pledged their faith, each to the other, and having declared same by the giving and receiving of rings; it is by the power vested in me by the State of North Carolina I pronounce you husband and wife. Shane, you may now kiss your beautiful bride.
-After cheers….
Let’s share this special poem together…
-David reads poem TO Kitty and Shane…
POEM
“Like a butterfly emerges
And unfolds its graceful wings,
A marriage grows and develops
With the love each partner brings
Your flight through life together
Is what you make it, so reach high
Spread your wings and learn to soar
As if with wings of a butterfly
Shane and Kitty
Share together life’s greatest adventures
Now the two of you are one
Shower each other with butterfly kisses
Your infinite journey has just begun
Be a comforter, encourager, and soulmate
Learn together, to listen, laugh and cry
Know now, God has given you your wings,
And with His help, you are ready to fly.”
-David continues to read TO Kitty and Shane...
Butterflies are as beautiful as they are fragile.  They symbolize transformation and all that is perfect in the world.  As you two join today in marriage, your commitment to love releases into the world a new wonder, a new beauty, a new perfection. One of the secrets of being happy with the one you love is to take hold lightly and let go lightly.  As we release these gentle creatures, may your love transform itself and everyone it touches into its highest form.
-David announces to Guests….
I am proud to present to you Mr. and Mrs. Shane Smith – YOU MAY NOW CAREFULLY OPEN YOUR ENVELOPES
RECESSIONAL AND PRESENTATION
-As envelopes begin to open, Kitty and Shane will walk through the “aisle” while everyone opens envelopes.
-Kitty and Shane will get box of butterflies at other end of “aisle” and return to the center/middle of the aisle and open the box.
-Music Playing:  ???
-Kitty and Shane move to first spot for pictures
AFTER ALL BUTTERFLIES ARE RELEASED
David Says:
