Summary – This week we will be looking at why having the Holy Spirit in our lives is so important. John 16:7 says that even Jesus acknowledged it is better for himself to go so that he could send the Helper to us! The Holy Spirit is our helper…to limit His interaction in our life is to ignore the lifeline he provides. He wants to help you in every area of your life.
Prayer Point – Pray that the student will begin to understand why the Holy Spirit is so important in the life of the believer. Pray that as they begin to open their hearts to Him, His leading in their lives would become more and more evident!

Introduction/Recap

Last week we talked about “Who” the Holy Spirit is…not what, but who
We established that the Holy Spirit is a person of the Godhead
Simply put, the Holy Spirit is God!
Sometimes the Holy Spirit kind of gets a bad rap
He might seem spooky or weird
But this week, we are going to look at why He is so important
Jesus said something that should give us a clue as to the importance of the Holy Spirit in John 16:7

Jesus

Everyone loves Jesus (for the most part)
Even non-Christians will say that Jesus was at least a good guy
And who wouldn’t think that way about him
He challenged the authorities that were oppressing the people
He stood up for the poor and marginalized
He revolutionized how we were to treat even those who hate us
He healed the sick and raised the dead
He treated women and children with respect and dignity
Jesus was and is awesome!
When you read about him in the Gospels, you can’t help but have an admiration for Him.
He also made some pretty big claims about Himself
Look at some of the things He said about himself leading up to the verse we are about to read
John 13:13 - You call me teacher and lord, and you are right, for so I am.
John14:1 - Believe in God, believe also in me
John 14:5 - I am the way the truth and the life. Noone comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:13 - Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it.
John 15 - Abide in me because I am the true vine
Jesus did incredible things, and He claimed incredible things about Himself....but look at what He says in John 16:7
John 16:7 “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”

The Helper

When Jesus says Helper here, he is taling about the Holy Spirit
This word Helper is also translated as Advocate
So Jesus is saying He is going to send the Holy Spirit to help you and to be a support for you
This Holy Spirit will be actively working in your life
Actively guiding you into truth and shaping you
Actively giving you strength to go through your trials
Actively supporting you in your greatest times of need
Actively supplying you with grace to go forward
Actively supplying us with joy and peace
The Holy Spirit is our Helper
This is so important because, it can be so easy to go through life, and never take advantage of the resources the Holy Spirit provides.
Story of man stranded on roof due to a flood
God sends a boat, and a helicopter
This is how we go through life sometimes
God has sent us this incredible resource....and the Holy Spirit is much more than a resource, but he supplies us with so much.
Next week we will look a little more into how the Holy Spirit helps
Yet we can ignore the help he provides, and go it on our own.
How can I take hold of the help the Spirit provides?
Prayer
Prayer has many forms and benefits, but one of them is tapping into the help of the Holy Spirit
Prayer is not so much a matter of discipline, but a matter of desperation
Its us saying, “I don’t want to go through this alone.” I need the help of the Holy Spirit
Devotions
Romans 10:17 says “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”
Spending time reading the Bible helps grow your faith
Growing in faith is how we learn to depend more and more on the Spirit.
Submission
I can fight for my will and desire, or I can submit to the will of God for my life.
When you fight for your will and your desires over God’s will for your life, you are forfeiting the help He wants to provide
Holy Spirit: You can go your own way, but I have everything you need ready and you can take hold of it through submission.
Salvation
Being born again

ABC’s of salvation

Prayer (pray this in your heart, as I pray it out loud)Dear Lord Jesus I believe you're the son of God. I believe that on the cross you took my sin, my shame, and my guilt, and you died for it. You faced hell for me so I wouldn't have to go. You rose from the dead to give me a place in heaven, a purpose on earth, and a relationship with your father. Today Lord Jesus I turn from my sin to be born again. God is my father, Jesus is my savior, the Holy Spirit is my helper, and heaven is my home. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Role of the Holy Spirit
The general teaching on the subject is that the Father is the head of Deity; the Son is the one who reveals Deity, while the Holy Spirit carries out the work of Deity.
