Introduction

Are you struggling in your marriage? Are you having trouble with your boss at work? Is the relationship between you and your kids, your parents, your co-workers rocky? Then today’s Scripture passage may just be the advice you need to bring healing to your relationships.
If anyone knew about rocky relationships, it is the author of our text today. James was one of Jesus brothers along with the author of the book of Jude.
Matthew 13:55 KJV 1900
Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
Can you imagine 7 or 10 year old James hearing his mother Mary say to the boys, “Why can’t you be more like your brother Jesus?” and his mocking reply behind her back to his other giggling siblings...”Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.”
Maybe that is why in John 7:5
John 7:5 KJV 1900
For neither did his brethren believe in him.
But after his resurrection Jesus appeared
1 Corinthians 15:7 KJV 1900
After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.
It was then that his brothers believed, James ultimately heading up the church in Jerusalem.
Like all of us. Hindsight is 20/20. But out of that hindsight James offers a very practical letter on how to live out our Christianity in this epistle. You have heard me quote J. Vernon McGee many times who said of the book of James, “It’s where the rubber meets the road.”
This simple verse, well-worth remembering is another of the spectacular falling leaves we find in Scripture as we continue to memorize his word in the fall of the year.
Lets look at these 3 words of relationship advice. James says Let Every Man be...

I. Swift to Hear

James 1:19 KJV 1900
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
At least 6 times in the gospels and 7 times in the book of Revelation we read, “He that hath an ear, let him hear.” God wants us to be listeners.
Have you noticed that God gave you two ears and only one mouth. He expects us to use them proportionally. We should listen more than we talk. And we should listen first.
I am sitting in on the Spiritual Care Partner training course we offer to volunteer chaplains at the hospital and it is built on the concept of listening. People often think that a Chaplain’s job is to offer pearls of wisdom. The new students and often the old pros pray, God give me the right words. But if truth be told. It is not our words that people need. We need to listen and let God speak to people as they talk and work through their problems..
We need to listen to the speaker. It could be your husband, your wife, your child, your boss, your co-worker, your friend. You need to listen to them. We use a tool in Pastoral Care called reflective listening. Instead of thinking about your reply when someone is talking. Listen carefully to what they say and repeat it back to them. “So you were driving down the street and deer jumped in front of the car and you swerved and hit the phone pole?” When you use reflective listening people know you were hearing them.
We need to listen to God. While the speaker is talking God is also talking. God will speak in these situations and God wants us to listen to Him.
Proverbs 8:34 KJV 1900
34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.
We are hearing God, and then watching and waiting. Sometimes we are too quick to blurt out what we think God is saying. We don’t have to speak everything that comes to our mind. Hearing God speak as we listen to the speaker helps us, not to cut to the chase, but to understand where the discussion is going and what can be accomplished.

II. Slow to Speak

James 1:19 KJV 1900
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
Proverbs 13:3 KJV 1900
3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: But he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
James 1:26 KJV 1900
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

III. Slow to Wrath

James 1:19 KJV 1900
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
This may be the hardest of all.
Proverbs 16:32 KJV 1900
32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; And he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
Psalm 91:13 KJV 1900
13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: The young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
Romans 16:20 KJV 1900
20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
Ecclesiastes 7:9 KJV 1900
9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
