Sermon Body

Big Idea: It is the responsibility of the entire body to build the body.
The church leadership’s job is to equip, train, and prepare the body to serve, but the is the entire body’s responsibility, through the practice of their gifts, to build up the body.
And this mandate, this responsibility DOES cross generational lines....lines that we have made almost impenetrable through the format and structure of our current ministry atmosphere.
Turn to Titus with me.
And as you are turning, let’s consider for a moment, the mandate of elders.

Mandate of Elders - Titus 1:5

What is the role and responsibility of elders?
Let me back up....what even is the office of elder?
Titus 1:5 ESV
This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you—
This is why.....
What is why?
Titus 1:1-4
Titus 1:1–4 ESV
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior; To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
Because of the calling of God for the elect....for their knowledge of the truth....for their godliness and growth in Christ....
In the hope of eternal life.....which God promises to us....
FOR THIS REASON.....this is why I left you Crete.
Titus 1:5 ESV
This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you—
For their growth in knowledge and holiness, I left you in Crete...
There is a higher purpose and calling upon our lives than our mere enjoyment and pleasure of what this world has to offer.
Put what remained in order
What remained of the church, of the body
It needed order. Leadership. Shepherding. Teaching. Equipping.
Titus’ job was to help ensure this was happening.
This involved ensuring that there was strong, mature, godly leadership.
Appoint elders
To assign a position of authority
God’s design is for a structure to be in place to safeguard truth and the well being of the body. God uses men, mature and godly men, to oversee his body.
Elder, same as pastor. Bishop, overseer, other words used to translate same idea.
God works under an authority structure.
Even he does… Trinity…Son yields to Father’s authority.
Authority does not indicate value or superiority. All three person of God-head are equal.
Authority simply denotes proper and careful operation
God desires that his church, the body operate well. Jesus is the head. The Spirit indwells each member of the body. But God’s design involves men to oversee, shepherd, and care for the body…to protect and lead it for his purposes.
These are elders.
One of their tasks is to ensure that the church was well ordered, well led, and cared for.
1 Corinthians 14:40
1 Corinthians 14:40 ESV
But all things should be done decently and in order.
The church gathering and functioning is not intended to be chaotic or every man for himself. It is supposed to be orderly, purposeful. The exercise of our spiritual gifts (context of 1 Cor 14) is intended to be done orderly and with deliberate purpose.
God is not a God of chaos but of order.
This requires instruction, teaching, and guarding of sound doctrine and truth.
Titus 1:9
Titus 1:9 ESV
He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
Also in his letter to Timothy, Paul says almost an identical thing...
1 Tim 1:3-7
1 Timothy 1:3–7 ESV
As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.
Defend sound doctrine. Protect against heresy and false teaching.
The mandate of the body, under the shepherding guidance of godly men who lead it, is to instruct, teach, equip, defend doctrine SO THAT THE BODY functions orderly and productively.
This is important and we will come back to it in a moment but it is important to note that the elders job includes that of teaching and defending truth for the wellbeing of the body.
Back to Titus 1:1-4, It is FOR THE GROWING KNOWLEDGE of TRUTH and for the GROWTH in HOLINESS that Paul is leaving Titus to appoint leaders.
Why? Because the ones being equipped with knowledge and growing in holiness will be expected to do something with that growth.
You are not here as an end to yourself....you are here to be trained, equipped, and built up TO BE AN EFFECTIVE VESSEL FOR MINISTRY to others.
You are not here to approach “church” selfishly....and believe it or not, I believe that is exactly how many Christians are approaching church in America....selfishly....for what THEY can get out of it, with little though to what part they play to building the body.
This is why there are certain qualifications for those in positions of leadership and teaching.

Necessary Qualifications - Titus 1:6-16

Titus 1:6–16 ESV
if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth. To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.
What is your reaction, your response to these verses?
Listen, my goal is not to go into each of these attributes and characteristics in full depth today. That could be a study for another day…but my point is this....NOT JUST ANYONE SHOULD BE IN POSITIONS OF LEADERSHIP.
What happens when the wrong people are given a position of leadership? What happens when ungodly and immature men are given a position of authority and influence?
When immature, unprepared, or ungodly men get into places of leadership, error, division, heresy, and problems ensue.
The church has often gone amiss by prematurely putting men in positions of leadership before they were tried, tested, or approved.
This is the purpose of ordination and ordination counsels.
These tend to focus on doctrinal positions which is critical and necessary! You wan to ensure there is a firm grip on truth before putting someone in a position to teach and instruct the body.
But frankly, it ought to include practical applications, considerations, and positions as well.
There are other considerations that need to be considered
And there needs to be some observable ministry experience to base ones judgments upon.
Nik Ripkin, in his book Insanity of God, details how pastors in China, where persecution is heavy, are not even given places of ministry until they have suffered at least one prison stay for the gospel. The point they were making is that until one has had to stand the test of their faith, the depth of their conviction, and until the cost of what they are truly willing to pay for the gospel is evidenced, they are not ready to lead.
Contrast that to how we carelessly throw men into places of leadership in our nation. There is start difference that ought to sober us.
Point is…with all that is at stake, we need to take VERY seriously, the requirements of a man called to lead. Joshua Harris’ will slip through but we could dramatically reduce their numbers if we would not just put a warm body in place of leadership simply because it is needed.
Their job....multifaceted, but Paul goes on to Titus in chapter 2

Responsibility to Teach - Titus 2:1-15

Titus 2:1–15 ESV
But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior. For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
Teach....
Instruct.
Give knowledge.
Train

to instruct in prudence or behavior that is becoming and shows good judgment, encourage, advise, urge

So not just imparting knowledge and giving facts, but also that of wisdom....good judgment....discernment…the proper application and usage of that knowledge.
Whose job is it to teach and train?
I submit to you that it is EVERYONE’s....every member of the body
I am going to explain why....And that comes in the next verses....
But I also want to submit this truth....God’s design does not

Intergenerational in approach Titus 2:3, 6-8

Titus 2:3 ESV
Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good,
Titus 2:6–8 ESV
Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.
What are some negatives that have resulted from age segregated approach to body life? Benefits?
Negative
Generational Gap
Disunity and interrupted oneness
Gives wrong impression of whose job it is to teach and instruct our children. Church is there to ASSIST parents, not replace them.
We miss out on insights and gifts of each generation....younger cannot see model of older and learn from them and older cannot be blessed and challenged by younger
Benefit
Ministry to parents to better engage in teaching and discussion
Learn at age and developmentally appropriate levels
Strengthens bonds with peers
Age and circumstantially appropriate studies/discussions.
Truth is, there is a place for both. Our current ministry model seeks to accomodate both.
OLDER MEN....
who are Sober-minded, dignified, self controlled, sound in faith, in love and in steadfastness
LIKEWISE.....Older woman
who are Reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine
They are to teach what is good AND SO TRAIN the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands…THAT the word of God may not be reviled.
BACK TO OLDER MEN…(AND INCLUDING OLDER WOMEN)
LIKEWISE (older men) urge the younger men to be self controlled
SHOW YOURSELVES (older men) in all respects to be a model of good works
IN your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing to say about US
This is not just intergenerational....it is WHOLE BODY.

Body in approach - Titus 2:3, 6-8

We already saw these verses
Titus 2:3 ESV
Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good,
Titus 2:6–8 ESV
Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.
AS Titus teaches the older men and older women....THEY IN TURN are to go out and teach those, model for those who are younger.
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ENTIRE BODY TO DISCIPLE AND BUILD THE BODY.
To further support this, look at 2 Timothy 2:1-2
2 Timothy 2:1–2 ESV
You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
It is the elders job to teach and train, to entrust truth to others WHO WILL ALSO TEACH
And this does not mean ONLY in a formal setting. Each of us as people in our sphere of influence that we are responsible for teaching and leading.
How does this look practically for the entire body to be responsible for teaching and building the entire body?
Teaching new believers
Getting trained to counsel and disciple
Investing in fatherless and motherless children
Investing in a young married couple
Caring for widow or widower
Investing on college students
Does not have to be formal. Sitting around dinner or a cup of coffee, teaching lessons learned, experiences had, promises clung to, etc.
As you look around this local gathering of the church, what question are you asking?
How is this “church” here to meet my needs?
How does this church match my criteria?
What role do I play in building up the body and finding oneness?
How can I use my gifts and experiences to push another towards Christ likeness?
And certainly there are things you want to look for in a healthy church, but so often in our American culture, we are looking for the wrong things and asking the wrong questions.
Precious few are entering churches and asking, how can I contribute to making this body more Christlike and achieving oneness for God’s glory.
If we are all supposed to be part of teaching, modeling, building up the body, what are we to teach, what are we to impart?

What to Teach - Titus 2:11-15; 3:1-11

What do we have to offer?
Some of you may be thinking…I am not a teacher. I am not trained. I am not able to teach or lead.
Wrong.
We all have something to offer. The instructions laid out here are for all of us.

Renounce ungodliness and worldly passions - Titus 2:11-12

Titus 2:11–12 ESV
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
Let me begin by pointing out this truth.....All of what we talk about here today is conditioned and dependent on this opening statement.....
For the grace of God has appeared....
Living, modeling, instructing, and successfully imparting any of these thing is dependent on grace.
What does it mean to renounce something?
Renounce - To refuse to consent to something. To deny. To deny any association with. To refuse to pay any attention to
How would you define ungodliness?
Ungodliness - Lack of reverence or attributes that keep in line with person or character of God.
How would you define worldly passions?
Worldly passions - Desires for the things of this temporal and immoral world. Desires for things of the values and longings of the flesh and sin.
In what way(s) can you do this? How can you be part of training others to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions?
Look at the church today. Really look. Do you think that we are (in general) characterized by the “renouncing of ungodliness and worldly passions?”
“I challenge you: over a week’s time, compare your screen time to your prayer time.” Paul Washer
Substitute screen time for other things as necessary.....Point is....where are are values and passions really at?
We are TOO in love with this world.
We are losing the church to the world. We are losing the younger generation because the passions of the world are more appealing to them than the pleasure of God.
How are we teaching a passion for the things of God to the body members around us, both young and old? How do we teach them to renounce ungodliness, worldly passions, to live self controlled, and upright lives? How can we teach these things?
Model it.
Let me make this point here....you cannot lead someone where you have not gone.
Are you growing in your hatred of sin, in your own renunciation of ungodliness and worldly passions? Are you regularly checking your life for the build up of clutter from our involvement in the world? Are you regularly clearing the build up of ungodliness and worldliness from your life?
AND THIS DOES NOT ALWAYS HAVE TO BE THINGS THAT ARE INHERENTLY SINFUL. It could be things that are amoral in nature but through out excessive investment in them, our passion for God is going dark.
Admonish/Warn
The level of effectiveness and ability here will depend somewhat on the depth of our relationship - which only further shows the need to develop more intentional and stronger oneness.
Use scripture. LOTS of it and FREQUENTLY. It is a living book after all.
Rebuke/Correct
We often avoid conflict and confrontation and we justify it in all sorts of ways.
Truth is though, when we avoid it, we not only do so to their harm, we disobey scripture.
Galatians 6:1
Galatians 6:1 ESV
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.
It is not JUST a good idea for the other persons benefit to rebuke sin, it is commanded. It is expected.
Again, the degree to which this will be effective may well depend upon the nature of the relationship, but I do not see any exception clauses for not doing this based on the fact that you don’t have a strong enough relationship with the person.
Alot of discernment and wisdom is needed here and certainly no one size answer fits all but the point is, we are obligated to lovingly do this for one another for their spiritual benefit and for the glory of God.
And if we are ONE body and the body cares for itself, it is the whole bodies job to do so.
Proactively teach
Family devotions
Sharing personal stories
Reading scripture together
Praying together
NOT JUST Older to Younger. Sometimes as we grow and get older, we grow stagnant and comfortable. Sometimes we need the passion of the younger generation of a younger believer to invigorate our souls again for God.
BUT WE ALL CAN TEACH and influence here…SO LONG AS we are ever growing and living with a passionate rejection of ungodliness and worldly passions and a passionate pursuit of God as our ALL in ALL.
What about this world do we fall most in love with?
Why is it so hard to keep the love of the world out of our lives?
How do we actively pursue living, modeling, and teaching the renunciation of ungodliness and worldly passions?
Next, Paul goes on to tell them to live self-controlled and upright lives.

Live self-controlled and upright lives - Titus 2:12-14

Titus 2:12–14 ESV
training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
How would you define self-control?
To live self-controlled
Pertaining to being prudent, moderately. Soundness of Mind.
To be in control of ones self.
To be master of self
To rules ones passions, desires, and actions and not be mastered by them.
Let me ask you an honest question....do you believe that the majority of the world (even Christians) are living self controlled lives or passion controlled lives?
Why do you make the observation you do?
This is something that even without a formal teaching position or doctrinal training, you can do.
This is a skill, practice, habit that often comes with age, experience, maturity, and spiritual growth.
And that which is part of our growing experience, that which we have developed in our own life or grown through, we are even more readily equipped to teach and impart to others.
Thus, those of you who are older, (hopefully) wiser, and who have life experiences to share have MUCH to impart.
Self-control being among them (most likely)
Do you know anything about exercising self control?
Then you have something teach
Even if you are not teacher, can you not teach this? Can you not teach self control? (to an extend probably right? There is certainly an element that we need the Spirit’s control and life in us to truly live self-controlled lives.....But can you not live Spirit filled lives and MODEL what that looks like?)
(to live) Upright and godly lives in this present age
Do you know anything about living upright lives? Do you know what it means to be righteous, to be holy, to do right?
Then you have something to teach.
Somebody share an example of what these might look like?
These are not ONE AND DONE types of teaching either.
How many of ever taught something ONCE and they just got it, it stuck, and they never needed a reminder?
This kind of teaching and investment involves long term commitment and faithfulness doesn't it?
Truth is, we do not even have to work at this one. If you read your bible, you have everything you need.
All of God’s expectations, rules, desires, commands, etc are here in black and white (and some red) for us to know and live by.
And those sections we struggle to understand, there are tools and people (in the body) that we can turn to and find help for them. There is no excuse for not knowing God’s will and commands because it has been made plain for us. His word has been preserved.
We have something to impart. The question is, are we willing to do it and do we have open hearts to receive as well as give?
Titus 3 goes on....

Instruct - Titus 3:1-2

Titus 3:1–2 ESV
Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.
What do these verses tell us to be, to do, to instruct?
Be submissive to rulers and authorities
Be obedient
Be ready for every good work
To speak evil of no one
To avoid quarreling
To be gentle
To show courtesy and respect towards all
NOW, which of these requires formal training to teach and instruct? NONE.
Point is, these are things we do as parents, grandparents, and good citizens of a nation, community, and group. Why do we think we have nothing to teach; nothing to offer?
Not only are we to instruct. We are to remind.

Remind Titus 3:3-8

Titus 3:3–8 ESV
For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.
What are to be reminded of and to be reminding others of?
The gospel.
As followers of Jesus, we ought to be equipped with the gospel…speaking it often…to unbelievers and believers alike.
One of the ways we build up the body, pursue unity, and find oneness is around the glorious message of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
What have you to offer? Remind each other of where we were, what Christ has done, and where we are now.
Point to scripture and see them promises of where God wants to take us; where He INTENDS to take us.
The gospel is something that we all OUGHT to be intimately aware of because it is the very thing that has changed us.
YES, we can learn to communicate it better, more clearly....and we should…but if our lives have been changed by the gospel, then we are equipped to share that message with others. AND WE SHOULD BE regularly.
Because Paul says in Titus 3:8
Titus 3:8 ESV
The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.
We want you to INSIST on these things....SO THAT those who believe MAY BE CAREFUL TO DEVOTE THEMSELVES TO GODO WORKS.
Our life is altered by the gospel
Our identity is altered by the gospel
Our purpose is altered by the gospel
Then why are we living like nothing has changed?
REMIND one another WHAT HAS CHANGED and who we are in Christ and therefore what the purpose of our life is now in Christ.
Across generational lines…especially older to younger....invest....remind....teach....pass on the truth’s of God’s word to the next generation who is being asked to take up the mantel and task of making fully devoted followers of Jesus.
And model Christ likeness to them.

Model - Titus 3:9-11

Titus 3:9–11 ESV
But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.
YOU…avoid foolish controversies...
YOU....avoid genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels FOR they are unprofitable and worthless.
In other words…model a commitment to truth, to priorities and do not get drug into meaningless and useless arguments and discussions that distract from the gospel and growing in the gospel.
Listen, in our life and example, we can teach, impart, and move people towards Christ likeness.

Practical Implementation

Truth is, this works for all of us across generational lines. As followers of Christ, we are equipped with all we need to invest in people for eternity and the kingdom.
We have the word
We have the Spirit
and we have our own changed lives by the power and work of the gospel.
What we need is a vision to build one another up into Christ likeness and we need to have a vision for taking responsibility for the entire body, regardless of their generation. We need to return to intergenerational relationships that place a priority on the health and strength of the body.
There is no reason why a 20’s something cannot be best friends with a 50’s somethings. Why that relationship cannot be rich and real.
What does this look like practically as a local assembly of the church? How do we live this out?
How does this work with families with young kids?
How does this work with visiting families?
Reach out to, service. Show resource of coloring books under welcome center
Show family room - OFFER TO SIT IN THERE WITH THEM.
Reach out to during week....build relationship
Sit with or next to during each weekly gathering to aid assist with their children (If they are open to it)
Invite their children to sit with you (once you have established a relationship that warrants this)
Conduct in home bible studies with them and their children
How does this work with our new opportunities for prayer and Sunday evening small groups?
