Transcript
One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”

Luke was a doc - accompanied Paul - researched and wrote this book using eye witness statements and interviews - this account mirrored in Mark 4 and Matthew 8

3 sections before /on the boat /after
Jut like any journey - a Jesus followers we acre called to journey with purpose with Jesus in our identity as adopted kids of God
so here we are before the boat - BACKDROP - Jesus preaching and teaching and healing many
crazy crowds - unusual for that tie most synagogues gathered 20 - people had to walk long distance - heat hunger - no hotel public toilets etc
JESUS EXHAUSTED (showing humanity) - exampling rhythm of rest and withdraw
only place to go is out
SECTION 1 GETTING ON THE BOAT
Luke (1. The Stormy Sea of Galilee (22–23))
Let us cross over to the other side of the lake:
With these words, JESUS MADE A PROMISE to His disciples. He didn’t say, “Let us perish in the middle of the Sea of Galilee.” He promised His disciples that they would cross over to the other side of the lake.i. “The Lake of Galilee is 13 miles long at its longest, and 8 miles wide at its widest. At this particular part it was about 5 miles across.” (Barclay)
This is AN ACT OF OBEDIENCE - they too would have been tired - big ask to then get into a boat and row/
but…THIS WAS THE FAMILIAR - COMFORT ZONE
getting into the boat = tired / excited/ Jesus to themselves/ holiday/familiar/comfortable happy place / fishers of men got to go back to the fish! /area of confidence /REST/ obedience
we need to learn the rhythms of Jesus as he models rest and withdraw.
SECTION 2 IN THE BOAT
they sail out - Jesus falls asleep - 13 men small boat heavy load - maybe taking shifts in rowing 6 at a time - big deal
Jesus showing his full humanity are you shock that he would be tired - could just sleep - no other preacher teacher ever faces the amount of pressure that Jesus did being fully human - needed to rest - physically fit - walking - being followed everywhere - under pressure - giving out constantly - Jesus worn out! yes - takes rest and able to sleep - able to sleep soundly in peace
What is your boat? where is your destination? how is the journey?
PUT YOURSELF THERE NOW WHAT WOULD YOU DO - HOW WOULD YOU REACT when a storm comes
HALF IN /HALF OUT -OBEDIENCE
INTERESTING - OBEDIENCE - they get into the boat obeying their master - what boat have you gotten into in obedience to Him, what have you been called to ? are you shocked when it doesn’t work out?
Luke (1. The Stormy Sea of Galilee (22–23))
“Jonah ended up in a storm because of his disobedience, but the disciples got into a storm because of their obedience to the Lord Paul too.
These are season fishermen - all familiar with the sea of Galilee all but maybe Judas came from the surrounding ares
most grew up on the waters, fishing, using boats it was part of who they were -their comfort zone -
sea of Galilee is well known for its sudden violent storms this shouldn’t have surprised them - but the severity of the storm is evident in the fact that these disciples - seasoned fishermen are freaking right out terrified.
WHAT DO YOU DO - OBEDIENCE - STORM - ?
are you a disciple - are you even in the boat - yes - lets do this - no - observe do you want in?
act out reaction
clear water - move - hold on - jump ship - cry in a corner?
This was meant to be their rest - time out in faithful obedience - part of the journey not a major event! what do you do when your journey plans mission is sabotaged?
all else exhausted they wake Jesus - WE are going to die! - WE - INCLUDED JESUS!
how often are we over anxious about Gods involvement in our work - in the our of storm we imagine everything is about to perish then we hear him say - where is your faith?
disciples did not take comfort from the sleeping Jesus - if he was at peace surely they should be at peace?
He wakes and IN AN INSTANT - all is calm - he rebukes the storm
Luke (2. Jesus Calms the Storm (24–25))
He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: Jesus didn’t merely quiet the wind and the sea; He rebuked the winds and the sea. This, along with the disciple’s great fear, and what Jesus would confront at their destination, gives the sense that Satan had a significant hand in this storm.i. Adam Clarke supposed that the storm was “Probably excited by Satan, the prince of the power of the air, who, having got the author and all the preachers of the Gospel together in a small vessel, thought by drowning it, to defeat the purposes of God, and thus to prevent the salvation of a ruined world. What a noble opportunity must this have appeared to the enemy of the human race!”
IN THE CALM - Jesus turns to his disciples and says - where is your faith??????
Not wow what a storm lol
The storm demonic attack!did not disturb Jesus but the unbelief of his disciples did - seem harsh????
Difficult circumstances storms are not evidence of unbelief - but unbelief is the rejection of the promise or a command of God relevant to a particular situation (Guzick)
Jesus had said let us go to the other side - JESUS SAID - promise they will get to the other side - not
lets do the best we can do and maybe we will drown!!!!
Don’t be surprised by rising storms in your acts of obedience remember your mission, purpose and who is with you .
COME ON the disciples should have known this is not how it was going to end that they perish in a storm on the sea but in the moment - this is not how the story ends.
Their response then is questions and revelation
Who is HE???????
IMMEDIATELY WE SEE His word is power over creation - revelation of Divinity -JESUS CREATOR WAS THERE IN THE BEGINNING - Gen 1, John 1:3
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
They obeyed because they knew His voice and responded
they would have known the psams - the penny drops -
O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, with your faithfulness all around you? You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them.
In these few verses and this one evening of events the disciples and us get to see the complete humanity of Jesus ( tired needing rest) and the fullness of His deity they saw Jesus for who He truly was an is and we get to do the same.
where are you on the journey - side - in the boat - in the storm - out the other side?
who are you in this account and what is your position when the unexpected storms hit - take courage He is with you what has He promised
