Pre-Sermon Ice Breaker

A Penn State Fan, a Pitt Fan and an Ohio State Fan are climbing a mountain arguing about who loves their team the most. The Pitt fan insists that he is the most loyal. He yells, “This is for Pitt!: and jumps off the mountain. Not to be outdone, the Penn State fan is next to profess his love for his team. He yells, “This is for Penn State!” and pushes the Ohio State fan off the mountain.

Introduction

China, Puerto Rico, India, Europe and coming soon to a location near you. Power shortages. We have serious infrastructure problems in the United States and one of the most vulnerable industries is the Electrical industry. In a generation that is moving away from coal, oil and nuclear power to more green-friendly sources of energy we find ourselves on the brink of a crisis a crisis that is bringing blackouts to major cities throughout the world because the power grid is unable to keep up with demand for power.
Physical examples reflect and shadow spiritual realities. Today we find that the Church lacks power. In 2019 approximately 3000 Protestant Churches were started in the U.S., but 4,500 churches closed. If you talk with people in Bedford County they will attest to the very real struggle that the Body of Christ faces here. In our text today we find that their is a source of power available to us that can enable us to have illumination, heat and growth in the years to come.
Throughout 2021 we have been engaged in the 2021 Scripture Memory Challenge. Our text this Sunday is the first in a series of Eight Messages that will lead us to the Season of Advent. This series is entitled “Falling Leaves.” Very appropriate for the first weekend of Fall Foliage . Many love this time of year because the falling leaves paint a picture rich in texture and color. In the same way I believe these passages of Scripture will paint a rich picture from God’s word of Colorful life-changing truth.
Acts, written by Luke, a physician to Theophilus , (Lover of God) Sometimes referred to as the Acts of the Holy Spirit, begins with this account of the work of the Holy Spirit in the Early Church. We learn about this power and how it changes everything. Let’s explore the three secrets of Holy Spirit Power found in this verse.

I. The Present of Power

Acts 1:8 KJV 1900
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Greek = Dynamis
This is the same root word from which is translated the word Dynamite.
Matthew 28:18 KJV 1900
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
John 1:12 KJV 1900
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
1 Corinthians 2:4 KJV 1900
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
Romans 1:16 KJV 1900
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

II. The Purpose of Power

Acts 1:8 KJV 1900
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Greek - Martys
We again get the word Martyr from this word.
A Martyr is one who is killed because of the beliefs.
Romans 5:8 KJV 1900
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Galatians 2:20 KJV 1900
20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
We must die to self and live to Christ.
Jesus died for us so that we would live for him.
We have received this power not so that we can exalt ourselves but so that we can exalt Christ.
Mark 2:10–11 KJV 1900
10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) 11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
John 10:41 KJV 1900
41 And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.
Luke 1:15 KJV 1900
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

III. The Place of Power

Acts 1:8 KJV 1900
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Matthew 28:19 KJV 1900
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mark 16:20 KJV 1900
20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
