I love to learn, but I have also experienced times in my life where I felt like not learning anymore. I have a conflicted nature on that at times. There are things I want to learn and others that I would just as soon not learn. I think that is the picture to a degree of this section of Hebrews. There were those who should have moved on in their learning by now, but simply hadn't. The writer is trying to move them into a deeper understanding and appreciation of Christ and His sacrifice for them and us. Join us this weeknd as we sure up these "Elementary Teachings" so we can move on to maturity in Christ.

Elementary Teachings

Hebrews 5:11–6:3 ESV
11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. 1 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits.
Before we really dive into this, I want to remind you that

Jesus is Greater!

Elementary

What exactly does that phrase mean?
el·e·men·ta·ry
adjective 1. relating to the basic elements of a subject. "an elementary astronomy course" 2. straightforward and uncomplicated.
The writer is referring to the basic tenets of the faith.
The most simply aspects of it.
He calls that Milk. Milk is what we give to children when they are not old enough to process meat.
In this passage the writer is saying that “by now” these believers, those he is writing to, ought to have moved beyond the basic teachings and into the understanding of more difficult doctrines.
Doctrine - noun
a particular principle, position, or policy taught or advocated, as of a religion or government: something that is taught; teachings collectively: religious
Theology - noun, plural the·ol·o·gies.
the field of study and analysis that treats of God and of God's attributes and relations to the universe; study of divine things or religious truth; divinity. a particular form, system, branch, or course of this study.
For instance,
Elementary Math - Addition, Subtraction, Division and Multiplication
Doctrinal Math includes the elementary math but goes on to encompass all math and how it works together. (i.e. Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, etc.)
Doctrine is larger than the elementary. Therefore, in order to truly grasp the doctrines of the Gospel, we need to eventually move beyond the elementary.
So let’s take the bulk of the rest of our time and dive a little deeper into these elementary teachings the writer addresses.
The List of Six
Repentance
Faith
Baptism
Laying on of Hands
Resurrection of the Dead
Eternal Judgement

Repentance

Changing our mind

Turning from works that did not save
Romans 12:2 ESV
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Our mind is not only changed about the sin in our life but also about the means to overcome that sin.

Faith

Hebrews 10:22 ESV
22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Belief in something enough to produce result.

James 2:19 ESV
19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
We could go on all day on this topic alone. Elementary does not mean unvaluable.

Instruction About Washing - Baptism

An outward expression of an inward change.

Sign of Obedience

Acts 22:16 ESV
16 And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’
Mark 16:16 ESV
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
Matthew 28:19 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Laying On of Hands

Ordination/Commissioning

Acts 6:6 ESV
6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them.
Acts 13:3 ESV
3 Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

The Resurrection of the Dead

Life beyond the grave.

Daniel 12:2 ESV
2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
1 Thessalonians 4:14 ESV
14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
John 6:40 ESV
40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

Eternal Judgement

Hebrews 9:27 ESV
27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
Revelation 20:11–15 ESV
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Romans 8:1 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

These Elementary Teachings

1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:11 ESV
11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
1 Corinthians 15:12–20 ESV
12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Paul is saying that we need to be solid in these things.

These elementary things are also foundational things.

They will be extremely important as we move on in our study next week and in our walk with the Lord each day.

Move on to Maturity

Repentance and Faith go hand in hand

Washing and Laying on of Hands go hand in hand

Resurrection and Judgement go hand in hand

These are the basic tenets of faith.

Basic Principles

There is more to know, but you must be firm here to move on.
