*WV Camp pic*
I’ll never forget the night I met JK Warrick for the first time.
It was August ___ 2014.
We were in this back room at the tabernacle of the West Virginia Nazarene Campground.
A handful of us pastors and our spouses were being interviewed for ordination by a General Superintendent of the Church of The Nazarene.
The are 6 Superintendents in the Nazarene church, and they are kind of like the “presidents” of our church worldwide.
I’m not gonna lie, it was kind of intimidating… just imagine that you were talking to a president- that’s what it felt like to me.
I was probably ten years younger than the rest of the candidates, and I was def the only youth pastor there.
I was asked about my call to ministry, and for some reason I mentioned that God must have a sense of humor bc he wanted an introvert like me to become a pastor.
My dad was in ministry for years and I grew up watching him talk to any stranger like he was their best friend while I awkwardly stood in the corner scared to talk to anyone I didn’t know.
So I felt it was kind of funny that God called me to ministry.

When I told JK Warrick this, what he said next put me at ease: “I’m the exact same way- been an introvert my whole life!”
Introvert:
a typically reserved or quiet person who tends to be introspective and enjoys spending time alone
But Pastors are around people- a lot!
And a guy like JK Warrick meets literally thousands of people a year all over the world.
But God has used Dr. Warrick in some incredible ways.
He is one of the best preachers I’ve ever heard- laying out the truth of God’s Word that cuts right to the heart of people in a way that everyone can understand.
And he just carries himself with a presence that’s different.
There’s a calm, quiet spirit about him and you just know you can trust this guy.
He’s like everyone’s Grandpa.
He’s different than others around him in the best way possible bc he’s filled with the Holy Spirit of God.

WE

When we’re around people like this, they make us think about how we’re living OUR lives.
And they challenge us to want to be better people than we are right now.
Not bc they are judgmental or point out our faults, but bc they simply live like Jesus did.
Holy.

GOD

Psalm 99:1–9 NIV
The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake. Great is the Lord in Zion; he is exalted over all the nations. Let them praise your great and awesome name— he is holy. The King is mighty, he loves justice— you have established equity; in Jacob you have done what is just and right. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy. Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel was among those who called on his name; they called on the Lord and he answered them. He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud; they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them. Lord our God, you answered them; you were to Israel a forgiving God, though you punished their misdeeds. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.

Shattered and Shaken

Psalm 99:1–2 NCV
The Lord is king. Let the peoples shake with fear. He sits between the gold creatures with wings. Let the earth shake. The Lord in Jerusalem is great; he is supreme over all the peoples.
To experience the presence of the King was to be shattered and shake.
In the Old Testament God’s voice is described as really loud:
Ezekiel 43:2 NIV
and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters, and the land was radiant with his glory.
And that’s just a fraction of God’s power.
It’s like this:
*Thanos pic*
In the Avengers, Thanos snaps his fingers and destroys people.
In reality, God speaks and things are created. He opens His mouth and the earth shakes.
His power is beyond anything we can think of.

Praise the Name

Psalm 99:3–4 NCV
Let them praise your name; it is great, holy and to be feared. The King is powerful and loves justice. Lord, you made things fair; you have done what is fair and right for the people of Jacob.
His holiness—the purity of his nature, is the reason why he should be exalted, praised, and worshipped.
And because He is holy and good, he cares about people deeply.
He looks out for the people of Israel, He personally sees to it that Israel is a healthy, harmonious community.
And He does the same things today.
This is reason for us to worship Him, bc it’s a practical demonstration of His holiness.

IN A WORLD FULL OF EVIL, GOD IS HOLY.

YOU

The God who is Holy wants to make us Holy like He is.
1 Peter 1:14–15 The Message
Don’t lazily slip back into those old grooves of evil, doing just what you feel like doing. You didn’t know any better then; you do now. As obedient children, let yourselves be pulled into a way of life shaped by God’s life, a life energetic and blazing with holiness.
Isaiah 6:3 ESV
And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”

WE

In a world that is about as messed up an unholy as it gets, may the Christ followers in this room choose to live the HOLY lives that God has called us to, shining light in the dark places and bringing hope to the hopeless.
