Where did Satan Get his Start?

Is Satan eternal?

Support for this view:

Satan seems to be described as a being that is omnipresent, which would lend itself to one who is eternal.
Without Satan there would be no temptation (even for an angel); thus no sin.

Problems with this view:

If he is internal, would he not also be omnipotent (all-powerful)
How could God defeat him; and what assurance would we have that God and Christ would be victorious.
How could Satan be subordinate to God?

Was Satan Created Good or Evil?

Created as an Evil Being

Isaiah 45:7 KJV 1900
7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.
Isaiah 45:7 ESV
7 I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the Lord, who does all these things.

Created as a Good Being

God created all things good (Gen 1:31)
God created him good and he became bad sinned and rebelled against God.
If evil does not exist; then there is no way for it to come into existence?

Did Satan Fall from Heaven?

Satan is a murderer and there is no truth in him.
John 8:44 ESV
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Angels were cast into Hades when they sinned
2 Peter 2:4 ESV
4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;
Angels didn’t keep their own domain were cast down
Jude 6–7 ESV
6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— 7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

Satan has Already Lost

1 Corinthians 15:54–57 ESV
54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Colossians 2:15 ESV
15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Hebrews 2:12–15 ESV
12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
Revelation 1:18 ESV
18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

He and his minions know they are toast

Matthew 8:29 ESV
29 And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”
James 2:19 ESV
19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!
Mark 1:24 ESV
24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
Mark 5:7 ESV
7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”

Satan is Real

1 Peter 5:8 ESV
8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
James 4:7 ESV
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Some Misapplied Passages

Isaiah 14:12

Isaiah 14:12 ESV
12 “How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low!
Some believe that Lucifer is Satan and that he fell from heaven.
Context shows that Lucifer is not Satan but the King of Babylon
Isaiah 14:4 ESV
4 you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon: “How the oppressor has ceased, the insolent fury ceased!

Ezekiel 28:13-19

Ezekiel 28:13–19 ESV
13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle; and crafted in gold were your settings and your engravings. On the day that you were created they were prepared. 14 You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. 15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you. 16 In the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned; so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God, and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 17 Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you. 18 By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your trade you profaned your sanctuaries; so I brought fire out from your midst; it consumed you, and I turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all who saw you. 19 All who know you among the peoples are appalled at you; you have come to a dreadful end and shall be no more forever.”
Context shows this to be the King of Tyre, not Satan.
Ezekiel 28:12 ESV
12 “Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God: “You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

Luke 10:18

Luke 10:18 ESV
18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
“Saw” is the imperfect tense (past action that is ongoing or uncompleted)
Did Satan continue to fall from heaven?
What is the context of Luke 10?
Jesus is celebrating with the 72 because even the demons are submitting to them. Jesus is referring to the power of Satan being thrown from heaven, not his origin or fall.

2 Peter 2:4 & Jude 6

2 Peter 2:4 ESV
4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;
Jude 6 ESV
6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day—
These passages are dealing with angels.
If Satan was a fallen angel, would he still be committed to the eternal chains and gloomy darkness?

Revelation 12:7-9

Revelation 12:7–9 ESV
7 Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, 8 but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
When did this war happen?
