Recap
As we continue on into Mark 1:29-34, we continue to see authority be a theme that is being shown to us by Mark.
Jesus continues to show His disciples his authority over different parts f life as well.
We are shown this model of discipleship through this passage as well as this reality that we see from Jesus having come to heal the sick and not the healthy in life.
Let’s read this passage...
Mark 1:29–34 ESV
29 And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31 And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. 32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
Now again as brought up before… this is something we see often in the beginning of Mark. You may already think to yourself idk… Mark what’s with you and exorcisms bro??? He’s like the modern kid who wants to always watch these scary movies and is fascinated by scary stuff.?
No...
We mentioned this last week about the identity of Jesus and it fulfilling what we see in the OT.
One commentator puts it this way...
“Mark situates all demons and exorcisms in the first half of the Gospel, thereby helping the reader to understand Jesus’ identity. The prophets foresaw that God would banish the names of idols on the Day of the Lord (Zech 13:2); for Mark the Day of the Lord is signified by Jesus’ vanquishing and banishing the works and servants of Satan.”
Zechariah 13:2 ESV
2 “And on that day, declares the Lord of hosts, I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, so that they shall be remembered no more. And also I will remove from the land the prophets and the spirit of uncleanness.
This is something that we can celebrate each day of the Lord which is… SUNDAY!

v. 29-31 We love because He first loved us.

Mark 1:29–31 ESV
29 And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31 And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
This seems to be a cool story in part because we get to have this glimpse into the personal lives of these disciples. Especially in getting to see that Simon (Peter) has a wife! How many of ya’ll know this? Some commentators think that maybe this is where Jesus stayed much of His time during his ministry.
We see pretty quickly...
Obviously Jesus would not be the greatest guest in the house if your Lord and King… having the ability to heal and if you were not to heal your bro’s wife’s mother.
I can only imagine the modern day conversations that would happen here.
But we see in the passage where Jesus “lifted her up”, “and the fever left her”.
We see here AGAIN… the AUTHORITY that Jesus has over everything in life.
He has the authority and the power to heal you and whatever that is in your life that needs healing and restoration.
Tim Keller says “By the middle of Mark 2 everyone is amazed, saying “We have never seen anything like this!” The deaf hear, the blind see, and the lame walk. There are, in fact, thirty healings recorded in the Gospels, all showing us that Jesus has authority over sickness. And over the first few chapters of his gospel, Mark goes on to stack up layer upon layer of evidence to show that Jesus’ authority extends to every realm of life.”
Jesus’ authority is NOT JUST OVER THE SPIRITUAL… it’s over the physical, the emotional, the relational. It’s over church, it’s over school, it’s over family, it’s over wants, desires, it’s over sports, it’s over free time… it’s OVER EVERYTHING!
I also LOVE how at the end of v. 31 we see that “she began to serve them.
Now this is something i think many who think the Bible is against women look over for first thing.
The second here is that we see the mother-in-law simply as a model of discipleship. Which requires lowly service from ALL, male and female.
By including accounts of the healing of women as well as men, Mark implied that Jesus was concerned about all people, including those who had a lowly place in society.
We also see this example of what a disciple does because of what Jesus did.
HE HEALS HER… SO SHE SERVES.
I’m reminded of a few passages here.
1 John 4:19–21 ESV
19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
We serve and humble ourselves before the people around us to loves and serve them because He came to serve us as JESUS.
Mark 10:45 ESV
45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
SERVICE: the the way of Jesus.
Serving is the way of Jesus and those who attend him, and thus it describes an essential characteristic of the kingdom of God that Jesus introduces and exemplifies. For Mark, the proper response of one who has been touched by Jesus is to serve “them,” that is, the Christian fellowship.

v. 32-34 He came to call the sinners, not the righteous.

Here’s what I want to bring out of this passage for today and it’s this...
Notice the people whom Jesus has sought to take notice of, to call, to heal, to transform.
Disciples who more than likely had been dropouts.
a demon possessed man.
a woman.
and more lowly sick and people possessed by demons.
JESUS SOUGHT AFTER THE PEOPLE WHO WERE AFTERTHOUGHTS.
It was the messy people who came to Jesus and that Jesus had compassion on to heal them and change them.
Mark 2:16–17 ESV
16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Luke 5:31 CSB
31 Jesus replied to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a doctor, but those who are sick.
Jesus comes after those people who don’t have it all together!
God desires for all to come to him. ALL. But the ones who are often in the life stage of humility, are often the ones who choose to follow him. Those the world has cast to the side.
For those of us who are christians… we cannot allows ourselves to look at somebody and have the unconscious thought o in the back of our heads of “i’m better than them because their life is messed up, mine is not. Our family goes to church and knows Jesus and they don’t.”
We cannot allows ourselves to think that.
