“I Get Weary”

OPEN YOUR BIBLES TO MATTHEW 26
Jesus has Passover meal (last supper) with His disciples
He tells them they will fall away and be scattered
After being raised He will go ahead of them at Galilee
Peter said I will never deny You, all other disciples say same thing

Matthew 26: 36-37

Matthew 26:36–37 NASB95
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed.
Matthew 26: 38
Matthew 26:38 NASB95
Then He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.”

Matthew 26: 38

Matthew 26:38 (NASB95)
Then He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.”
Our Lord Jesus says keep watch with me / not for me
Jesus includes us and wants to be in this walk & in ministry with us
Notice back at verse 36

Matthew 26: 36

Matthew 26:36 (NASB95)
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”
This brings us to our first point in today’s message
Is Jesus too far away? (I feel like He is not there sometimes)

Is Jesus too far away?

If you have confessed Jesus as your Lord and Savior and have been born again (experienced a spiritual re-birth) He will never leave us or forsake us

John 14: 18

John 14:18 NASB95
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

Acts 17: 27

Acts 17:27 NASB95
that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;
I absolutely love this one!!

Ephesians 2: 4-6

Ephesians 2:4–6 NASB95
But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
This last passage is an amazing promise and proof He is not far off or forsaken us
We are sealed in His Holy Spirit of promise Eph 1: 13-14
Ephesians 1:13–14 NASB95
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
So how does this all play out in our walk which seems so difficult at times?
Our spirit is seated in heavenly places - its was done on your day of salvation, that doesn’t change, our spirit is already seated with Him, where ? Heavenly places
We are a 3 part creation - spirit / soul / body - spirit seated with Him, soul which is the center of all emotions, body - flesh over spirit experiencing the everyday circumstances of life here on earth

1 Thessalonians 5: 23

1 Thessalonians 5:23 NASB95
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He will always be near, you and I are seated in spirit - how long? eternally, you and I may drift away from Him at times but He does not leave us nor forsake us. A father does not leave his child (example when our boys come over)
Our second point in today ‘s mesaage

“Is my suffering in vain?”

Matthew 26: 38

Matthew 26:38 (NASB95)
Then He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.”
Notice Jesus says His soul is deeply grieved
Our soul is feeling all these emotions of life, we grieve in our situations that come to us in life at times (greek for grieved is overwhelmed, sorrowful, distressed

grieved (periluposs) - overwhelmed, sorrowful, or distressed

Jesus went through suffering and distress for us
He did not say I’m God, I’m over and above suffering, I’m all powerful
He humbled Himself to the point of death

Philippians 2: 6-8

Philippians 2:6–8 NASB95
who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Look God is building us through this circumstance, He is writing our story chapter by chapter, the story includes Him with us!

Romans 5: 1-2

Romans 5:1–2 NASB95
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.

Romans 5: 3-5

Romans 5:3–5 NASB95
And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Keep Watch With Me - Slide

Here we see Judas pretending to honor Christ by repeatedly kissing Him, and Peter failing Christ by sleeping when he should have been praying, fighting with a sword when he should have been yielding, and fleeing when he boasted he would die for the Lord. “The cup” (v. 39) was the price Christ would pay by being made sin on the cross. His holy nature revolted at the prospect of being made sin, yet His holy will was one with the Father and He willingly laid down His life.

Peter, a fisherman, tries to be a soldier and win spiritual victories with a carnal weapon! We need to remind ourselves that Christ does not need to be defended. We fight Satan, not flesh and blood (Eph. 6:10–18); the weapons we use are spiritual, not fleshly (2 Cor. 10:3–5; Heb. 4:12). Moses made this same mistake (Acts 7:22–28), and had to spend forty years learning to let God fight his battles.
