The Holy Spirit - For Our Advantage

One Body, Many Parts

Last week we covered Holy Spirit giving ministry gifts to the church
Receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior - called / preparing to serve / all called to ministry

Ephesians 4:4

Ephesians 4:4 NASB95
There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;
We grow in Christ / fitted and held together / proper individual work / cause growth to the body / built up in love

Ephesians 4:15-16

Ephesians 4:15–16 NASB95
but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
Paul in 1 Cor 12 lays out beautifully the Godhead supplying the gifts and carrying out the activity of the gifts in the church

1 Corinthians 12:4-6

1 Corinthians 12:4–6 NASB95
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.
The Trinity as we know in our fundamental doctrine, the word not mentioned in Scripture but we see the Godhead through the whole council in the word of God.
John 4 - God is Spirit (Jesus speaking) Matthew 28- go make disciples, baptize in the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Colossians 2- (love it here)

Colossians 2:9

Colossians 2:9 NASB95
For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,
We know from last week after Jesus ascended to heaven He gave gifts to men, the structure or design for His church
Ephesians 4:11
Ephesians 4:11 NASB95
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,
Why Jesus did this
Ephesians 4:12
Ephesians 4:12 NASB95
for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
Now as we get into the effects and manifestations
Remember Gifts to the church are

Gifts to the Church

Ministries - position of service
Effects - activity or deed
Manifestation - set forth
Lets look at the effects and manifestations in the church
Before moving forward - why is Paul explaining and laying all of this out to the church at Corinth?
Now lets look at effects and manifestations
Open Your Bibles to 1 Cor 12

1 Corinthians 12: 6-7

1 Corinthians 12:6–7 NASB95
There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

1 Corinthians 12: 8-9

1 Corinthians 12:8–9 NASB95
For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,

1 Corinthians 12: 10

1 Corinthians 12:10 NASB95
and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
1 Corinthians 12: 11-12
1 Corinthians 12:11–12 NASB95
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.
Paul goes on to explain how important all parts of the body are
He uses the illustration of the different parts of our physical body
The foot says I am not part of the hand, the ear says I am not an eye, the eye cannot say to the hand I have no need of you
Paul was having to go through this because of the competitive fleshly worldly wisdom that was in the church, what seemed most prominent outward gift was given most honor and Paul was correcting that, and pride and arrogance erupted from that.
He goes on to explain those unoticed in the church
Those who seem less honorable, on these bestowed much more honor, the less presentable become more presentable
… renounce every right of their own and live for the sake of Jesus Christ. When reproached, they hold their peace.… They will not go to law to defend their rights.… They are determined to leave their rights to God alone.” -Bonhoeffer
How does that look to us in the church
Paul points out every gift in the church has be done in love or it is nothing

1 Corinthians 13: 4-5

1 Corinthians 13:4–5 NASB95
Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,

1 Corinthians 13: 6-7

1 Corinthians 13:6–7 NASB95
does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Really amazing why Paul is telling the church about love because it checks up the gift and proves Holy Spirit is effecting or manifesting that gift not the flesh (my preference) or wisdom of men
Example - welcome to our worship experience
Examples of gifts used and not used in humbleness
Lets go back to Paul laying it out to the church beautifully

1 Corinthians 14: 1-2

1 Corinthians 14:1–2 NASB95
Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.

1 Corinthians 14: 3-4

1 Corinthians 14:3–4 NASB95
But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation. One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.

1 Corinthians 14: 6

1 Corinthians 14:6 NASB95
But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?

1 Corinthians 14: 12-13

1 Corinthians 14:12–13 NASB95
So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church. Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
Remember Paul brings love at the forefront for all gifts, so this is whats going on when someone is speaking in tongues (praying in tongues) with no interpretation- they are edifying themselves because they are in direct communication but because zealous they want that for many others and glory towards God gets shifted to that person, flesh and spirit are always at battle with each other

1 Corinthians 14: 18-19

1 Corinthians 14:18–19 NASB95
I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all; however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
