Opening:
Good morning kids! I am so glad you are here. It is so important that we come and worship Jesus together. I am especially glad that you are here. Jesus loved teaching children. We are going through the A B C’s of theology. Last week we learned about Christ. This week we are going to learn about something known as “Depravity.”
Depravity:
Depravity is the truth that sinfulness affects all of a person’s nature and describes the spiritual condition of fallen man.
Introduction of the Text:
We are going to look at a few verses. Ephesians 2:1-3 “1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.”
Explanation:
These verses say that we are all dead in our sin. This doesn’t mean that we are physically dead. It means we are spiritually dead. Our souls are totally sinful. This is what depravity means. It is often called total depravity because we are totally depraved. We are totally sinful. A teacher I respect greatly calls this idea, radical corruption. This is because we are radically corrupted by sin. This doesn’t mean that we are as sinful as we could possibly be, but it means that every area of our lives is corrupted by our sin.
This is why we are spiritually dead. And dead men can’t do much. We are incapable of even coming to God. We need help! Paul says we are by nature children of wrath. This means that our very nature is sinful and therefore deserving of God’s wrath. We are all disobedient to God. This means we deserve to be punished. We have sinned against God. And this is who we are at our core. We are dead in our sin. We need a lot of help. We can’t do anything to save ourselves because we are dead by nature. We need someone to bring us to life.
Introduction of the Text:
This is the good news! Have you ever heard the word “gospel?” That word means good news. This is the best news ever. We my be dead in our sins, but listen to the next verses. Ephesians 2:4-5 “4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—”
Explanation:
The bad news is that we are dead in our trespasses and sins. The good news is that God is rich in mercy and love! Even though we are totally depraved and sinful to the core, God is merciful! He has made us alive through Jesus! This is called grace. Grace means getting something good you don’t deserve. We don’t deserve to be made alive, but God has made us alive in Christ. All we are saved are alive in Christ. God brings our dead souls to life. We place our faith in Him and we are saved. This is good news.
This is why we come together to worship God. We are totally depraved and dead in our sins. But God has given us grace and made alive through Jesus! This is the good news.
Re-Explanation:
Remember, Depravity is the truth that sinfulness affects all of a person’s nature and describes the spiritual condition of fallen man.
This means that we are sinful to our core. We are dead in our sin. We need God to bring us to life and free us from our sins. God does this in His grace. Let’s pray.
